Event Recap: 2018 ARCA Statistics from Madison, Wisconsin (June 15, 2018)

Event statistics following the ninth race of the 2018 ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards season, the Herr’s Potato Chips 200 at Madison International Speedway in Oregon, Wisconsin.

Chandler Smith became the first polesitter to win an ARCA race this season, besting another Smith, Zane Smith, by 11.045 seconds to win his first career race. The two were followed by points leader Sheldon Creed, then Chase Purdy and Gus Dean.

Notes of Interest – Race Recap
- This is Chandler Smith’s first career victory. His previous best finish was fourth last month at Toledo Speedway in Ohio. This is the second consecutive race with a first-time winner; Sheldon Creed won the last race at Michigan International Speedway.
- Smith is the seventh driver to win an ARCA race this season. He joins three-race winner Zane Smith, as well as single-race victors Michael Self, Christian Eckes, Brandon Jones, Harrison Burton and Sheldon Creed.
- Smith won from the pole position, the first driver this season to win from the top starting position. Smith is the first driver to win from the pole at Madison International Speedway and the first driver to win an ARCA race from the pole since Kyle Benjamin won the 2017 race at Winchester Speedway in Indiana (also last victory by a polesitter on a half-mile track).
- Smith won by 11.045 seconds, marking the third consecutive the margin of victory was the largest of the season. Previously, Harrison Burton won by 4.451 seconds at Pocono Raceway, and Sheldon Creed won by 9.006 at Michigan International Speedway. Prior to Pocono, the first six races each featured margins of victory of less than two seconds.
- In only four ARCA starts this season, Smith has finished in the top 10 in every race, and in the top five in three of those four races. He has an average finish of 5.0.
- Smith has started from the pole position in all four of his starts this season and in his career, and is the only driver to start from the pole position more than once in 2018.
- Smith became the youngest race winner this season, at 15 years old, resetting the mark set by Christian Eckes, who was 17 years old when he won at Salem Speedway. Seven of the nine races this season have been won by a teenager (Michael Self at Daytona International Speedway and Brandon Jones at Charlotte Motor Speedway are the exceptions).
- Smith led a race-high 102 laps, and has led a season-high 367 laps this season. He’s led at least 51 laps in all four of his starts in 2018, and more than 100 laps in a race twice.
- Toyota has won all nine ARCA races this season.
- This is the third victory of the season for car owner Bill Venturini. The other six races have been by drivers competing in cars owned by Matthew Miller.
- Zane Smith finished second, his sixth top-three finish of the season and seventh top five of 2018. Smith has an average finish of 5.78 this season.
- Zane Smith led 82 laps, in the seventh race he’s led out of nine this season.
- Points leader Sheldon Creed finished third, his seventh top-three finish of the season, and eighth top-five result of 2018 – both season-high marks. Creed has finished in the top three in each of the last four races. His average finish of 4.33 is the best among all drivers this season that have competed in all nine races.
- Chase Purdy finished fourth, his third top five finish of the season and fifth top 10 of 2018. Purdy was the fourth Toyota driver in the top four.
- Gus Dean finished fifth, the highest-finishing Chevrolet driver and one of two Chevrolet drivers in the top 10. Dean has two consecutive top fives and three straight top 10s, and four top 10s overall this season.
- Natalie Decker finished sixth, her best result since finishing fifth in the season opener at Daytona International Speedway. Decker, the final driver to finish on the lead lap, now has four top 10s on the season.
- Bret Holmes finished seventh, his fourth top 10 of 2018.
- Eddie Fatscher finished eighth, his best finish of the season in two races and first top 10.
- Colby Howard finished ninth, his second top 10 in as many starts this season. Howard was the only other Chevrolet driver, other than Gus Dean, to finish in the top 10.
- Toni Breidinger finished 10th in her series debut, one of two drivers making their first ARCA start. Tommy Vigh Jr. finished 15th in his series debut, while Dick Karth (18th) and Darrel Basham (19th) also made their season debuts.
- A total of 19 cars competed, a season-low, with 14 finishing the race, also a season-low.
- The race featured five leaders who exchanged the lead six times.
- A total of nine drivers improved on their starting position in the race.
- The next race will be Friday, June 22, with the Papa Nicholas Coffee 150 at Gateway International Speedway in Madison, Illinois.
