South African Grand Prix Statistics (January 1, 2019)

Welcome back to another year of the Motor Racing Statistics blog. The 2018 version of this website ended prematurely but the goal again in 2019 will be to have at least one blog every day, 365 days of the year. The emphasis may be less on race results but that has yet to be determined.

The 1968 Formula 1 World Championship began 51 years ago on this day, with the South African Grand Prix at Kyalami Racing Circuit in Gauteng. Jim Clark won the race, his final F1 World Championship race in an obviously storied career.

The South African Grand Prix was held 33 times, with the first race held in 1934 – at Prince George Circuit in East London – and won by American-born Whitney Straight of New York City. Alain Prost won the final race at Kyalami in 1993.

Here’s a quick look at statistics for the South African Grand Prix.

South African Grand Prix:
- Races: 33
- Most Wins, Driver: Jim Clark (1961, 1963, 1965, 1968)
- Most Wins, Constructor: Lotus (1961, 1963, 1965, 1966, 1968, 1978)
- No. of Drivers to Win Race: 24
- Circuits to Host Race: Kyalami (22), Prince George Circuit (11)

Notes of Interest:
- There were two South African Grand Prix in 1960, and neither was part of the World Championship. Paul Frere won the first race, also on January 1, while Stirling Moss triumphed in the second edition of the race on December 27.
