Each day from now until the Saturday before the Indianapolis 500, we’ll post a list of stats related to the race. Some are well-known statistics, while others are a little more in-depth.

Here is a look at the drivers who have won the Pit Stop Challenge, which is held on Carb Day on the Friday before the race. Carb Day was also held on the Thursday before the race for many years.

Notes of Interest

- The 2008 Pit Stop Competition was not contested due to rain.

- Sam Hornish Jr., Ryan Briscoe and Will Power all won their single Pit Stop Challenge with chief mechanic Matt Jonsson.

- Johnny Rutherford became the first two-time winner and first driver to win the competition two years in a row, in 1978 and 1979. Overall, a total of seven drivers have won the competition in consecutive years: Rutherford, Rick Mears, Danny Sullivan, Al Unser Jr., Jacques Villeneuve, Buddy Rice and Helio Castroneves. Castroneves has won the event four consecutive times 2006-2010, though not in 2008 when the competition was canceled, and 2015-2016).

- Five drivers have won the competition and the Indianapolis 500 in the same year: Bobby Unser (1981), Danny Sullivan (1985), Jacques Villeneuve (1995), Buddy Rice (2004) and Helio Castroneves (twice, in 2002 and 2009).
