Notes of Interest
- The driver that has set the race’s fastest lap has gone on to
win that year’s race 12 times since 1951.
- Emerson Fittipaldi leads all drivers with four fastest race laps
(1989, 1990, 1993 and 1994). Fittipaldi is also the only driver to win the race
twice after setting that race’s fastest lap.
- Gordon Johncock and Tony Kanaan have each set the race’s fastest
lap three times, but none of those resulted in a victory that year. Both
drivers did win the race in different years, however.
- Bobby Rahal set the race’s fastest lap on the final lap in 1986,
en route to winning the race. The speed was 209.152 mph.
- Emerson Fittipaldi and Arie Luyendyk both set the fastest lap in
the 1990 race. Fittipaldi set a speed of 222.574 mph on Lap 91, while Luyendyk
matched that on Lap 162. Fittipaldi led the most laps of that race while
Luyendyk won the race.
- Tomas Scheckter was the only rookie to set the fastest lap, in
2002. He set the fastest lap on Lap 20, at 226.499 mph.
- Four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Al Unser Sr. never set the
fastest race lap, the only four-time winner without doing so.
- Roger McCluskey, Tony Stewart and Marco Andretti have set the
fastest laps the most times without winning the race. Each of the three has set
the race’s fastest lap twice.
- Each of the last two race winners have set the race’s fastest
lap: Alexander Rossi (2016) and Takuma Sato (2017).
