If you’re not first, you might as well be last, some people
might say. In terms of the Daytona 500, some drivers have been both.
Here is a list of the nine drivers who have won the Daytona
500 as well as finished last in the 500-mile classic. A total of 38 drivers
have won the race, meaning that nearly 24 percent of race winners have the
distinction of crossing the line first, and being out first.
Cale Yarborough: Won in 1968, 1977, 1983, 1984; Last place
in 1962 (48th); 1976 (42nd)
Pete Hamilton: Won in 1970; Last place in 1973 (40th)
Geoffrey Bodine: Won in 1986; Last place in 1982 (42nd)
Benny Parsons: Won in 1975; Last place in 1983 (42nd)
Bobby Allison: Won in 1978, 1982, 1988; Last place in 1986

A.J. Foyt: Won in 1972; Last place in 1987 (42nd)
Ryan Newman: Won in 2008; Last place in 2003 (43rd)
Joey Logano: Won in 2015; Last place in 2009 (43rd)

Notes of Interest
- Cale Yarborough is the only driver to win the race and
finish last on more than one occasion each. He is also the only driver to
finish last one year and win the race the next year.
