Event Recap: 2018 IndyCar Series Statistics from Portland (September 2, 2018)

Takuma Sato – who started 20th – drove through the field to win his third career IndyCar Series race, holding off a hard-charging Ryan Hunter-Reay in an exciting race all-around in the return of IndyCar racing to the Pacific Northwest. Sebastien Bourdais, who won the last IndyCar race in 2007 (as part of the Champ Car World Series), finished third, ahead of Spencer Pigot and points leader Scott Dixon, who rebounded from a first-lap incident which involved five cars.

Notes of Interest – Race Recap (Portland International Raceway)
- This marked the 25th IndyCar race at Portland International Raceway and the first for the IndyCar Series. The previous 24 races came under CART or Champ Car World Series sanction.
- This is Takuma Sato’s first victory of the 2018 IndyCar Series season and the third of his career. His most recent victory came in the 2017 Indianapolis 500.
- This is Sato’s first victory on a permanent road course. His first victory in 2013 came in the Long Beach Grand Prix, a temporary street circuit, and he won the 2017 Indianapolis 500 on the two-and-a-half mile oval.
- Sato is the eighth driver to win an IndyCar race this season. Josef Newgarden, Scott Dixon, Alexander Rossi and Will Power each have three victories, while Sebastien Bourdais, Ryan Hunter-Reay and James Hinchcliffe each have one win.
