Motor Racing Statistics: By The Numbers (June 26, 2018)

The latest edition of the all-encompassing Motor Racing Statistics “By The Numbers” blog, which looks at numbers throughout many forms of motorsports. This blog runs on Tuesdays through the year.

1 – Each of the last four Formula 1 World Championship grand prix has been won from the pole position, including Sunday’s French Grand Prix at Circuit Paul Ricard.

2 – Matt Hagan scored his second NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Funny Car win of 2018 by defeating Courtney Force in the finals, with a pass of 4.094 seconds at 288.21 mph.

2 – Sheldon Creed won his second career ARCA Racing Series race Friday at Gateway Motorsports Park, leading 84 of the 120 laps of the Papa Nicholas Coffee 150.

3 – Three drivers have two victories each in the DTM Series, through last weekend’s races at Norisring in Nuremberg, Germany. Edoardo Mortara won the first race of the weekend, with Marco Wittman scoring the second victory of the event, both their second wins of 2018. Gary Paffett was the first driver to win twice in 2018.

3 – Tanner Gray and Eddie Krawiec earned their third victories respectively in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle categories. Gray bested Erica Enders in the finals, while Krawiec topped Jerry Savoie in his final-round matchup.

5 – Five of this year’s 10 Verizon IndyCar Series races have been won by Team Penske drivers (Josef Newgarden, 3; Will Power, 2).

6 – The next IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship race is the Six Hours of The Glen at Watkins Glen International in New York.

6 – Paul McMahan earned six top-10 finishes during the Ohio Sprint Speedweek to win the seven-race championship. Two of the nine scheduled races were rained out. In the current All-Star Circuit of Champions points standings, McMahan is seventh.

10 – Josef Newgarden won his 10th career Verizon IndyCar Series race Sunday at Road America, leading 53 of the 55 laps. It was also his third win of the season.

12 – Twelve drivers have won in Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series competition at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Illinois. Tony Stewart leads all drivers in victories with three.

17 – Martin Truex Jr. won Sunday’s Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway in California, giving Furniture Row Racing its 17th team victory in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series.

18 – This weekend’s Overton’s 400 marks the 18th Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Illinois.

19 – Nineteen-year-old Justin Haley broke through for his first career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series victory Saturday at Gateway Motorsports Park in Madison, Illinois, leading the final seven laps.

24 – The Austrian Grand Prix has been won by 24 different drivers, with Alain Prost leading all drivers with three victories.

26 – Lewis Hamilton earned his 75th career Formula 1 World Championship pole position Saturday for the French Grand Prix, at his record 26th different track.

32 – This weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix is the 32nd edition of the race and the 30th at the Red Bull Ring. The 1970 race was won by Jacky Ickx, when the track was known as the Osterreichring. It is also the 31st as part of Formula 1 World Championship – the inaugural race in 1963 was not part of championship.

41 – Forty-one-year-old Jason Johnson died Sunday following an incident in a World of Outlaws race Saturday at Beaver Dam Raceway in Wisconsin. On the track, Johnson earned 12 WoO feature wins – including the 2016 Knoxville Nationals – and overall won more than 250 sprint car races. However, no statistics can accurately describe the person Jason Johnson was. #Forever41

65 – Lewis Hamilton won his 65th Formula 1 World Championship grand prix Sunday, leading all 53 laps of the French Grand Prix at Circuit Paul Ricard.

105 – Blake Alexander broke through for his first career NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Top fuel victory Sunday at Summit Racing Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio, becoming the 105th driver to triumph in the Top Fuel class. Alexander defeated Terry McMillan with a pass of 4.011 seconds at 297.81 mph. Alexander made it to the finals after defeating all three Don Schumacher Racing entries in the first three rounds.

111 – Martin Truex Jr. has led 111 of the last 310 laps in the last three road course events in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, and has led the most laps in each of those races. Truex has won two of those, including Sunday’s Toyota / Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway in California for his 18th career victory.

75,000 – The Indianapolis Motor Speedway announced Tuesday a dirt track will be built in the infield of the track, which will host the USAC National Midget Series during the weekend of the Brickyard 400. The race will feature a purse of $75,000.
