Motor Racing Statistics – By The Numbers (May 8, 2018)

The latest edition of the all-encompassing Motor Racing Statistics “By The Numbers” blog, which looks at numbers throughout many forms of motorsports. This blog runs on Tuesdays through the year.

1 – Fernando Alonso earned his first career FIA World Endurance Championship victory in Saturday’s 6 Hours of Spa, teaming with Sebastien Buemi and Kazuki Nakajima in the No. 8 Toyota Gazoo Racing machine to win overall and in the LMP1 class. The race was the first of the 2018-19 season. Ho-Pin Tung, Gabriel Aubry and Stephane Richelmi were winners in the LMP2 category.

1 – Fernando Alonso wasn’t the only driver to earn his first sports car victory over the weekend. Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves teamed with Ricky Taylor to win the Prototype category of Sunday’s Acura Sports Car Challenge at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

2 – Two drivers have won the Grand Prix of Indianapolis – Simon Pagenaud and Will Power, who have two victories each.

2 – Johnny Sauter became the first driver this season in NASCAR Camping World Truck Series competition with two victories, winning the JEGS 200 at Dover International Speedway in Delaware.

3 – The third round of the World Touring Car Championship at the Nurburgring is scheduled for this weekend, with Races 7, 8 and 9 of the 2018 season. Gabriele Tarquini has a series-leading three victories going into the weekend.

3.874 – Leah Pritchett turned in an elapsed time of 3.874 seconds in Sunday’s NHRA Southern Nationals, to earn her first NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Top Fuel victory of the season. Pritchett won before the green light, as opponent Blake Alexander went six thousandths of a second too quick to turn on the red light. Pritchett now has six Top Fuel wins.

4 – Four drivers led Saturday’s USAC Amsoil Sprint Car National Championship race, won by Kevin Thomas Jr. Thomas led the final eight laps, after Dave Darland, Chase Stockon and Tyler Courtney took turns at the point. Thomas also set the fast qualifying time and won his heat.

4 – Kevin Harvick earned a season-best fourth Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Dover International Speedway, leading 201 of the 400 laps. Harvick has won four or more races in six of his 18 Cup Series seasons.

5 – Scott McLaughlin won his series-leading fifth Virgin Australia Supercars Championship victory and fourth in a row, sweeping the Perth SuperSprint at Barbagallo Raceway in Wanneroo, Western Australia.

6 – Donny Schatz scored a series-leading sixth World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series A-Main feature victory Friday, May 4, at Lake Ozark Speedway in Missouri.

10 – Ten different drivers have won in the first 10 races in NASCAR Xfinity Series competition this season, with Justin Allgaier breaking through in an exciting finish in the OneMain Financial 200 at Dover International Speedway. The streak overall has reached 13 drivers in 13 consecutive races, dating back to last year’s race at Texas Motor Speedway.

12 – Vincent Nobile scored his 12th NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Pro Stock victory of the season, besting Tanner Gray in the finals of Sunday’s NHRA Southern Nationals. Nobile got off the line second but turned in an elapsed time of 6.599 seconds over Gray’s 6.614-second run.

12 – Ferrari has 12 victories in the Spanish Grand Prix, the most victories in the race by a constructor.

20 – Kody Swanson earned his 20th USAC Silver Crown Series victory Friday at Toledo Speedway in Ohio, becoming the second driver to reach that mark after leading the final 61 laps. Jack Hewitt holds the record at 23 Silver Crown wins.

25 – This weekend’s KC Masterpiece 400 at Kansas Speedway marks the 25th Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at the mile-and-a-half track.

45 – Eddie Krawiec won his 45th career NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Pro Stock Motorcycle race, and the second of his career, by winning Sunday’s NHRA Southern Nationals finals over Scotty Pollacheck. Krawiec jumped ahead of Pollacheck despite a slightly slower reaction time to earn his 17th career round win over Pollacheck.

60 – Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix will mark the 60th edition of the race, held at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya outside Barcelona. Michael Schumacher holds the record with six Spanish Grand Prix victories.
