The latest edition of the all-encompassing Motor Racing Statistics “By The Numbers” blog, which looks at numbers throughout many forms of motorsports. This blog runs on Tuesdays through the year.

By The Numbers

3 – Three Canadians have been named Rookie of the Year at the Indianapolis 500, including this year’s recipient, Robert Wickens. Others were Jacques Villeneuve (1994) and Alex Tagliani (2009).

4 – Brandon Jones became the fourth driver this season to win an ARCA Racing Series event, leading 32 laps of the 100-lap event at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina.

5 – This year marked the fifth time in history that the winners of the Indianapolis 500 and Monaco Grand Prix came from the same country. Will Power (Indy) and Daniel Ricciardo (Monaco) both hail from Australia. Drivers from the United Kingdom earned victories in both races in 1965 and 1966, while Emerson Fittipaldi (Indy) and Ayrton Senna (Monaco) gave Brazil wins in both 1989 and 1993.

23 – Kyle Busch won the Coca Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, giving him victories at all 23 tracks on the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series schedule. He is the first driver in NASCAR Cup Series history to win at every track at which he’s competed.

30 – There were 30 lead changes in this year’s Indianapolis 500.

37 – Will Power became the fifth driver to win the Indianapolis 500 at the age of 37. Alexander Rossi was the only driver in the top five not age 37; he is 26 years old. It marked the first time in the race’s history that the top three drivers in the race were the same age, and sixth time the winner and second place were the same age (1915, 1928, 1971, 1995, 2016 and 2018).

42 – Will Power became the 42nd driver to win both the Indianapolis 500 and an IndyCar championship.

45 – Daniel Ricciardo became the 45th different winner of the Monaco Grand Prix after he led all 78 laps of the 76th edition of the race.

She won one race and led 124 laps in her IndyCar career.

166.935 – Will Power averaged 166.935 mph in this year’s Indianapolis 500, good enough for the 10th fastest Indy 500 on record.
