The latest edition of the all-encompassing Motor Racing Statistics “By The Numbers” blog, which looks at numbers throughout many forms of motorsports. This blog runs on Tuesdays through the year.

.0029 – Zane Smith edged Joseph Graf Jr. by 0.029 seconds in Friday’s ARCA race at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama, in the closest finish in series history. It marked Smith's second career victory, with both coming in the last three races.

1 – Brendon Hartley earned his first career Formula 1 World Championship point. He became the first driver from New Zealand to score any points in an F1 grand prix since Chris Amon in the 1976 Spanish Grand Prix.

2 – Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen have each posted two DNFs in the first four races of the 2018 Formula 1 World Championship season. The Red Bull Racing pair collided in Turn 1 late in Sunday’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Both drivers dropped out in the second race of the season, the Bahrain Grand Prix, within the first three laps.

2 – Justin Grant picked up his second career USAC Silver Crown Series victory Sunday at Terre Haute Action Track in Indiana, leading the final 17 laps and 57 laps overall.

3 – Lewis Hamilton led only three laps in Sunday’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the fewest laps he’s led in winning a Formula 1 grand prix.

3 – Jean-Eric Vergne returned to victory lane for the third time during the 2017-18 season, winning the Paris ePrix on the streets of Paris, to push his points lead to 31 over Sam Bird.

3 – Ott Tanak recorded his third career World Rally Championship victory by winning the Rally Argentina, the fifth race on the 2018 calendar. Tanak won by 37.7 seconds over Thierry Neuville. Tanak is also the third driver to win a WRC event this season, behind Neuville and Sebastien Ogier (series-best three wins).

4 – Four different drivers have won in Formula 2 competition this season in four races, with Alexander Albon and George Russell winning races at Baku Street Circuit in the second round of the season. Albon won the feature event, while Russell topped the sprint race.

3.813 – Steve Torrence’s elapsed time of 3.813 seconds in the final round of Sunday’s Four-Wide Nationals, the sixth round of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing season, was quickest in the Top Fuel class, as he ran away with his third consecutive Four-Wide victory and third win this season.

5 – Donny Schatz scored a series-leading fifth World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series A-Main feature victory Saturday, April 28, at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas. Schatz led the final five laps in the 30-lap contest.

12 – Lewis Hamilton has now won at least one Formula 1 World Championship grand prix in 12 consecutive seasons. Michael Schumacher holds the record for victories in consecutive seasons with 15, from 1992 to 2006.

19 – Joey Logano earned his 19th career Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series victory in dominating fashion, leading 70 laps in the 188-lap GEICO 500 at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama, for his third victory at the track in the last six Cup Series races.

23 – Erica Enders won her 23rd career NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Pro Stock event, besting Vincent Nobile, Chris McGaha and Drew Skillman in the final round of Sunday’s NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at zMAX Dragway in Concord, North Carolina. 

36 – Cruz Pedregon earned his 36th career NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Funny Car victory, and first since 2014 (92-race slump), in Sunday’s NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at zMAX Dragway in Concord, North Carolina. Pedregon’s reaction time of 0.032 seconds was the quickest of the four drivers in the final round, and he posted a 4.059 elapsed time.

60 – Dave Darland became the first driver to score 60 career USAC National Sprint Car Series victories, when he won Friday’s 30-lapper at Bloomington Speedway in Indiana.

63 – Lewis Hamilton picked up his 63rd career Formula 1 World Championship victory in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku. In the process, he picked up the points lead.

97 – This weekend’s AAA 400 Drive for Autism 400 marks the 97th at the track for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, dating back to July 1969, when Richard Petty scored his first of seven victories at the track.

979 – For the first time in 979 Formula 1 World Championship races, a Monegasque driver scored points. Charles Leclerc finished sixth in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, becoming the first Monaco-born driver since Louis Chiron to score points in F1. Chiron scored points in the second-ever F1 race, the 1950 Monaco Grand Prix, with a third-place effort (despite two sixth-place finishes, in 1951 and 1955, points were only awarded through fifth place until 1960). Leclerc earned eight points.
