Event Recap: 2018 Supercars Championship from Winton SuperSprint, Race #1 (May 19, 2018)

Event statistics following the 13th race of the 2018 Supercars Championship season, Race #1 of the Winton SuperSprint at Winton Motor Raceway in Victoria.

Rick Kelly scored his first victory of the season, and the first for Nissan of 2018, after leading the final seven laps of the 40-lapper. He finished a half second ahead of Scott Pye, with Shane van Gisbergen taking third.

Notes of Interest – Race/Weekend Recap
- This is Rick Kelly’s first Supercars Championship victory of the season and the 13th of his career. Kelly’s last victory came November 19, 2011, at Sandown Raceway in Melbourne, Victoria.
- Kelly is one of seven drivers to win this season. He joins five-time race winner Scott McLaughlin, as well as two-time race winners Shane van Gisbergen and Jamie Whincup and single-race winners Scott Pye, David Reynolds and Craig Lowndes.
- This is Kelly’s first victory at Winton. He now has victories at 11 different tracks (has two victories each at Bathurst and Hidden Valley Raceway in Darwin).
- Kelly’s victory came from the fourth position. Five of his 13 victories have come from the fourth position, and seven wins have come from the second row.
- Kelly is the first driver to win a race this season from the fourth starting position, and second driver to win from the second row. Twelve of the 13 races this season have been won from the front two rows.
- Kelly now has three podiums this season, all in the last five races (finished second and third in two races at Phillip Island). Overall, he has 58 career podiums.
- Kelly has finished in the top 10 in four races, all in the last five races.
- Kelly ended Scott McLaughlin’s four-race winning streak, and became the first driver to win a race since Craig Lowndes won Race #2 at Symmons Plains Raceway on April 8.
- Kelly led seven laps, the fewest a driver has led in a race this season and won. The fewest previously came March 25 at Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit, when David Reynolds led all 11 laps of Race #4.
- Kelly’s victory of .531 seconds over Scott Pye was the third smallest margin of victory this season.
- Kelly has now led 29 laps this season, more than the previous three seasons combined (26 laps from 2015-2017; led 37 laps between 2014-2017).
- Kelly’s victory was the first for Nissan this season. Nissan’s last victory in Supercars came in August 24, 2013, when James Moffat won, also at Winton. Holden has seven wins this season and Ford has five.
- Scott Pye finished second, earning his second podium of the season (won Race #3 of the Melbourne 400 in March) and ninth top 10 in 13 races this season. Pye, driving the highest-finishing Holden, led a race-high 17 laps.
- Shane van Gisbergen was third, earning his fifth podium of 2018 and 10th top 10 in 13 races this season.
- Fabian Coulthard was fourth, earning his fifth top five and seventh top 10 of 2018. Coulthard was the highest-finishing Ford driver.
- Coulthard’s teammate, points leader Scott McLaughlin, finished fifth. Despite his four-race winning streak ending, McLaughlin continued his strong season, and has an average finish of 4.46 through 13 races.
- McLaughlin led 11 laps to push his season total to a series-high 184 laps led. McLaughlin has also led a series-high nine races this year.
- Michael Caruso was sixth, earning his fifth top 10 of the season to put two Nissans in the top six. All three manufacturers had two cars in the top six.
- Tim Slade was seventh, earning his seventh top 10 of 2018.
- Garth Tander finished eighth, advancing a race-high 12 positions from his 20th-starting position.
- James Courtney was ninth, claiming his seventh top 10 of the season.
- Mark Winterbottom rounded out the top 10 with his fifth top-10 effort of 2018.
- Craig Lowndes was 13th, ending a six-race streak of finishing in the top 10.
- Chaz Mostert finished 14th, only the third race of the season he’s finished outside the top 10.
- David Reynolds finished a season-worst 25th, six laps down. It marked the first time this season Reynolds did not finish every lap of a race. Despite his 25th-place effort, Reynolds still has the fifth-best average finish, of 8.0.
- In addition to Reynolds, Cameron Waters also failed to finish every lap of a race for the first time this season. He was the race’s only retirement, dropping out with a failed driveshaft after completing 28 laps. Waters’ last race retirement came August 20, 2017, in Race #2 at Sydney Motorsport Park in New South Wales (first retirement in 21 races).
- A total of 12 drivers improved on their starting position in the race.
- The next event will be Race #2 of the Winton SuperSprint, May 20.
