Event Recap: 2017-18 Formula E Berlin ePrix Statistics (May 19, 2018)

Event statistics following the ninth round of the 2017-18 FIA Formula E season, the BMW i Berlin ePrix on the temporary 2.375-kilometer (1.47-mile) Flughafen Tempelhof on the streets of Berlin, Germany.

Daniel Abt scored the second Formula E victory of his career, both wins coming this season, by taking the checkered flag in his home race. Abt triumphed by 6.758 seconds over Lucas di Grassi, becoming the second driver in successive Formula E races to win his home race. Jean-Eric Vergne won the Paris ePrix last month; the Frenchman and points leader claimed third in Saturday’s affair.

Saturday’s race marked the seventh race of the 2018 calendar year (first two rounds in Hong Kong were held at the end of 2017).

Notes of Interest
- This is Daniel Abt’s second Formula E victory of the season and the second of his career. Abt won his first career race in March at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City.
- Abt is one of four drivers to win a race this season – all of whom have multiple victories. Jean-Eric Vergne has a series-high three wins, while Abt, Sam Bird and Felix Rosenqvist each have two.
- This is Abt’s first victory in Germany and first in Europe. His two victories span two continents.
- Abt’s victory came from the pole position, the first time he’s won a Formula E race from the top starting spot. His other victory came from fifth, the worst a driver has started and won from this season. Five of the nine races this season have been won from the pole; Jean-Eric Vergne has won three races from the pole, while Felix Rosenqvist has a victory from the pole.
- Abt led all 45 laps, becoming the first driver this season to lead every lap of a race, and first since Lucas di Grassi led every lap in Race 1 of the 2016-2017 Montreal ePrix.
- Abt becomes the second driver in as many races to win on home turf, the German winning in Berlin. Jean-Eric Vergne’s most recent victory came in his home country of France, with the Paris ePrix.
- Both of Abt’s podiums this season have resulted in victories. He now has six podiums in 42 races in his career.
- Abt now has an average finish this season of 8.89. tied for the fifth best among all competitors. He also moved to fourth in the points standings, up two positions from sixth.
- Abt has now led three races for a total of 70 laps. That’s the second most laps led by a driver this season, behind Jean-Eric Vergne’s 137 laps led.
- Abt also set the fastest lap of the race.
- Lucas di Grassi has put together a solid performance over the last four races, including a second-place finish at Berlin. Having failed to score points in the first four races and no finish better than ninth in the first five races, di Grassi has four straight podiums, with runner-up efforts in each of those.
- Di Grassi’s average finish over the first five races was 15.4; his average finish over the last four races is 2.0. Di Grassi is now sixth in the points standings; he was only 19th with three points after the fifth race.
- Points leader Jean-Eric Vergne cemented his fifth podium in nine races this season to increase his points lead with three races remaining. All nine of Vergne’s finishes have come in the top five.
- Sebastien Buemi was fourth, his sixth finish of sixth or better this season. Buemi has an average finish of 6.89 this season, but is only fifth in the points standings.
- Oliver Turvey finished fifth, the second best finish he’s earned this season (was season-best second in Mexico City).
- Mitch Evans was sixth, his best finish since finishing fourth in Uruguay in the sixth race of the season.
- Sam Bird, second in the standings, was seventh, only his second finish outside the top five this season. It also broke a streak of three straight races of finishing on the podium. Bird has completed all nine races in which he’s contested this season.
- Three other Germans – Maro Engel, Andre Lotterer and Nick Heidfeld – rounded out the top 10, as all four Germans earned points in their home race.
- Early season points leader Felix Rosenqvist finished 11th, and has failed to score points in three of the last five races.
- French drivers Tom Dillmann and Stephane Sarrazin finished 13th and 20th, respectively replacing Edoardo Mortara and Tom Blomqvist, who had DTM commitments. It marked Mortara’s first missed Formula E race this season.
- This marked the first time that a race went without a caution since Race 2 of the 2016-2017 Montreal ePrix.
- All 20 cars completed the race, and all on the lead lap, marking the first time for both in the 42-race history of Formula E. 
- A total of 20 drivers have scored points this season.
- The next FIA Formula E race is Saturday, June 10, with the Zurich ePrix in Zurich, Switzerland, marking the first circuit race in the country of any kind since the 1950s (racing was canceled in Switzerland following the 1955 24 Hours of Le Mans tragedy which killed more than 80 people).
