WRC Event Preview: 2018 Tour de Corse (April 5, 2018)

The fourth round of the 2018 World Rally Championship is this weekend, with the 61st annual Tour de Corse, on the island of Corsica, part of France. The 12-stage event began Thursday, April 5, with Kris Meeke winning the 5.45-kilometer shakedown in Sorbo Ocagnano.

Special stages get underway Friday, April 6, with four special stages. Six stages are scheduled for Saturday, April 7, and a pair of stages – including the 55.17-kilometer stage, the longest of this year’s Tour de Corse – closes out the event on Sunday, April 8. Overall, the total distance for the event – dubbed the “Ten Thousand Turns Rally” – is scheduled for 333.48 kilometers (207.21 miles), on an asphalt surface.

The rally base is at Bastia. The defending race winner is Thierry Neuville with co-driver Nicolas Gilsoul. Here are some statistics related to the Tour de Corse as well as the 2018 season.

Notes of Interest – Tour de Corse
- The Tour de Corse has been part of the World Rally Championship for the last four years (since 2015) and from 1973-2008 (for 1994-1996, only for the 2-Litre World Championship for Manufacturers). The event was also part of the France Cup in 2009, the Intercontinental Rally Challenge in 2011 and 2012, and European Rally Championship in 2013 and 2014. The event was not held in 2010 (canceled).
- Thirteen drivers have won the Tour de Corse multiple times. Thierry Neuville became the 13th in 2017 when he won for the second time, adding to his 2011 victory. It was his first in the event, however, in the WRC.
- For Neuville, it marked his second career WRC; he went on to win four more WRC events in 2017 en route to finishing second in the championship.
- Four winners of the Tour de Corse have gone on to win the World Rally Championship on seven occasions since 1973: Didier Auriol (1994); Peter Solberg (2003); Sebastien Loeb (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008); and Sebastien Ogier (2016).
- Twenty-three of the 35 drivers to win the Tour de Corse have been French. Other countries with drivers represented include Spain (3); Finland (2); Belgium (2); Italy (1); United Kingdom (1); Germany (1); Norway (1); and Estonia (1).
