WRC Event Preview: 2018 Rally Argentina (April 26, 2018)

The fifth round of the 2018 World Rally Championship is this weekend, with the 38th annual YPF Rally Argentina in South America. The 18-stage event began Thursday, April 26, with Jari-Matti Latvala winning the 1.9-kilometer shakedown in Villa Carlos Paz.

Special stages get underway Friday, April 27, with eight special stages. Seven stages are scheduled for Saturday, April 28, and the final three stages on Sunday, April 29. Overall, the total distance for the event is scheduled for 360.61 kilometers (224.07 miles), on a gravel surface, with an overall distance, including transport, of 1,383.62 kilometers (859.74 miles)

The rally base is at Villa Carlos Paz. The defending race winner is Thierry Neuville with co-driver Nicolas Gilsoul. Here are some statistics related to Rally Argentina as well as the 2018 season.

Notes of Interest – Rally Argentina
- The Rally Argentina has been part of the World Rally Championship for the last seven years (since 2011). Additionally, the rally was part of the WRC schedule from 1980-1981; 1983-1994; and 1996-2009. The event was canceled in 1982 (war between England and Argentina) but was run in 1995 and 2010 (Intercontinental Rally Challenge).
- Seven drivers have won Rally Argentina multiple times. Sebastien Loeb became the seventh driver in 2006 when he won from the second time, adding to his 2005 victory. He won six more times.
- Thierry Neuville became the 21st driver to win Rally Argentina, when he triumphed in the 2017 event.
- Eight winners of the Rally Argentina have gone on to win the World Rally Championship in the same season on 17 occasions: Walter Rohrl (1980); Hannu Mikkola (1983); Stig Blomqvist (1984); Timo Salonen (1985); Juha Kankkunen (1993); Didier Auriol (1994); Tommi Makinen (1996-1999); and Sebastien Loeb (2005-2009; 2011-2012). Loeb’s only victory in Rally Argentina in a year he didn’t win the WRC title was in 2013.
- Jorge Recalde is the only Argentine driver to win Rally Argentina. He won in 1988 and 1995.
- Sebastien Ogier has never won Rally Argentina; he finished second on three occasions (2013, 2014 and 2016). He also earned a fourth podium in 2011 (finished third).
