Notes of Interest – Race/Weekend Recap
- This is Scott McLaughlin’s third Supercars Championship victory of the season and the 19th of his career. McLaughlin also won the first race of the Melbourne 400 and Race #1 at Phillip Island, giving him a sweep of the track.
- McLaughlin is one of six drivers to win this season, and the first with three victories. Shane van Gisbergen and Jamie Whincup have two victories, while Scott Pye, David Reynolds and Craig Lowndes also have one victory this season.
- This is McLaughlin’s sixth victory at Phillip Island. He has won twice at the track in each of the last three even-ending years – 2014, 2016 and 2018. He has now won five of six races at the track from the pole, and all of them after starting on the front row.
- McLaughlin has now won three races or more in three different Supercars Championship seasons – 2014, 2017 and 2018. He’s recorded at least one victory in five of the last six seasons.
- This is McLaughlin’s sixth podium of the season and the 48th of his career. He now has nine podiums in 15 races at Phillip Island.
- McLaughlin has finished in the top 10 in nine of 10 races this season, tying him with Chaz Mostert for the series lead in 2018.
- McLaughlin scored his fourth pole position of 2018 for the race, which leads all drivers. He also won two pole positions in the four races that comprise the Melbourne 400 and the pole for Race #1 at Phillip Island. It also marked his eighth pole at Phillip Island, the most he’s earned at a single track.
- McLaughlin earned the fifth victory of the season for New Zealand drivers, tying the country with Australia for most among the two countries.
- This is the third victory of the season for Ford; McLaughlin is the only Ford driver with a victory. Holden has seven victories, while Nissan is looking for its first win.
- David Reynolds finished second, earning his third podium finish of the season and first since winning the 11-lap Race #4 of the Melbourne 400. Reynolds, also the top-finishing Holden driver, now has a five-race streak of top 10s (has eight overall), the longest active streak among all drivers. Reynolds retained second in the points standings.
- Reynolds’s three podiums in 10 races this season ties his total for all of the 2017 season, and is tied for the second most of his career in a single season (2015, with seven).
- Rick Kelly earned his second podium of the season and second in succession by finishing third. Kelly led 21 laps, the most he’s led since leading 21 laps since he and Karl Reindler combined to finish 11th in Race #1 of the 2013 Gold Coast 600 in Queensland. The last time he led 21 laps or more in a race without a co-driver was Race #1 of the Norton 360 Sandown Challenge at Sandown Raceway in November 2011.
- Kelly also ensured that Nissan was on the podium for the second consecutive race, marking the first time Nissan had finished on the podium in back-to-back Supercars Championship races since May 2015, with Michael Caruso third in Race #1 of the Navara SuperSprint and Kelly second in Race #2 of the event at Winton Motor Raceway in Victoria.
- For Kelly, this was his 57th career podium and fifth at Phillip Island.
- Fabian Coulthard finished fourth, his fourth top-five and fifth top-10 finish of the 2018 season. It marked the third time his season Coulthard and McLaughlin both finished a race in the top-five.
- Michael Caruso rounded out the top-five with his season-best finish of fifth. Caruso’s most recent top-five finish came as a result of fifth place in the 2017 season finale at the Newcastle Street Circuit.
- Shane van Gisbergen finished sixth, marking his seventh top-10 finish of 2018.
- Craig Lowndes finished seventh, and has finished seventh or better in four straight races and five of the last six. Lowndes has seven top 10s this season. Lowndes also moved to fourth in the points standings, eight points ahead of now fifth-place runner Jamie Whincup, who entered the weekend with the points lead.
- Chaz Mostert earned his ninth top 10 of the season by finishing eighth. Despite his nine top 10s, Mostert is one of five drivers that hasn’t led a lap this season. The others are Simona de Silvestro, Todd Hazelwood, Richie Stanaway and Tim Blanchard.
- Jamie Whincup was ninth, earning his eighth top-10 finish of the season. It marked the first time since 2010 that Whincup failed to earn at least one top-five finish at the track in a season.
- Garth Tander rounded out the top-10 with his fifth top-10 effort of 2018.
- Scott Pye finished 11th, only the second time he’s finished outside the top 10 this season. However, he is the only driver to have not finished worse than 11th this season, and his 7.5 average finish this season is fourth best among all drivers (behind Scott McLaughlin, David Reynolds and Jamie Whincup).
- Nick Percat advanced a race-high 13 positions from 26th to advance the most positions from start to finish (26th to 13th). Percat had finished 26th in Race #1.
- James Courtney was the only race retirement, dropping out with transaxle problems after completing five laps. It marked the second time this season – all in the last five races – in which Courtney failed to complete.
- A total of 14 drivers improved on their starting position in the race.
- The next event will be the Perth Super Sprint, May 5-6, at Barbagallo Raceway in Wanneroo, Western Australia. Scott McLaughlin swept the race weekend in 2017.
