Notes of Interest – Race/Weekend Recap
- This is Ryan Preece’s first victory of the 2018 NASCAR Xfinity Series season, the second of his career and first at Bristol. Both of his victories (Iowa Speedway in 2017) have come on tracks measuring less than one mile.
- Preece is the 45th driver to win an Xfinity Series race at Bristol. Austin Dillon was the 44th and most recent driver to win an Xfinity Series race at Bristol, in the 2016 summer race.
- Preece is the seventh driver in as many races this season to win an Xfinity Series race, joining Tyler Reddick, Kevin Harvick, Kyle Larson, Brad Keselowski, Joey Logano and Ryan Blaney. Only Reddick is a series regular, though Preece is a part-time competitor in the Xfinity Series and is not competing fulltime in the Cup Series.
- Preece ended
- Preece has finished in the top 10 in each of his three races this season, beginning with the race at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California. He finished ninth there and fifth at Texas Motor Speedway.
- Preece has won one Xfinity Series race in each of the last two seasons. His first Xfinity Series victory came in 2017 at Iowa Speedway.
- Both of Preece’s victories have come with Joe Gibbs Racing and both in a Toyota. His first victory came in the No. 20 and Saturday’s victory came in the No. 18.
- This is Preece’s first top-10 finish in three races at Bristol. His best finish at the track came in the 2016 summer race, when he finished 15th driving for Johnny Davis.
- This is Preece’s first Xfinity Series victory outside the pole position; he started seventh at Bristol. Preece is the first driver this season to win an Xfinity Series race from the seventh starting position and the first driver to win from the seventh starting position in an Xfinity Series race since Kyle Larson won the 2017 spring race at Richmond International Raceway.
- Preece is the first driver to win an Xfinity Series race at Bristol from the seventh starting position, and the fourth row, since Kenny Wallace won the 1994 summer race. Overall, five drivers have won an Xfinity Series race at Bristol from the seventh starting position.
- Preece’s victory from the seventh starting position ends a four-race streak in which the race winner came from the front row.
- This is Toyota’s 12th Xfinity Series victory at Bristol, all in the last 16 races. Toyota has won the last three Xfinity Series races at Bristol, all with Joe Gibbs Racing.
- Preece led 39 laps of the race, the fourth most of a driver during the race (behind Brandon Jones, Daniel Hemric and Justin Allgaier). This marks the seventh race in the last nine in which the Bristol winner has not led the most laps. Overall, drivers have won 33 times in 72 races at Bristol and not been the leader of the most laps.
- Justin Allgaier finished second in the highest-finishing Chevrolet for his third runner-up finish in the last four races and his fourth top-three finish of the season, leading all drivers.
- Allgaier has now finished in the top five in seven of 15 Xfinity Series races at Bristol and nine top 10s. Allgaier won the 2010 spring race at Bristol.
- Allgaier led 47 laps, his fourth race led this season. His four races led in 2018 are the second most among all drivers, behind Christopher Bell.
- Daniel Hemric finished third for the second consecutive race, tying his season-best result. After finishes of 26th and 11th to start the season, Hemric has finished sixth or better in each of the last five races, and quietly moved into second in the points standings.
- Hemric led 61 laps, and is tied with Joey Logano for races led this season; both drivers have led three of the seven races.
- Hemric’s three consecutive top-five finishes are the most in succession in his career; he had top-five finishes in two races twice in 2017. His first career top-five finish also came at Bristol, in the 2017 spring race.
- Series points leader Elliott Sadler continued his streak of consecutive top-10 finishes, garnering fourth in Saturday’s race. Despite leading no laps (he’s only led two races for a total of six laps this season), Sadler stayed near the front and took the checkered with his fifth straight top-five result and seventh top 10 in as many races in 2018. Sadler, who’s completed all but one lap this season (1,355 out of 1,356, which leads all drivers), has finished in the top 10 in 15 of the last 16 races, dating back to last year.
- Sadler remains the only driver to finish every race this season better than what he started. He made up nine positions at Bristol, and has advanced an average of 10.28 positions per race. He owns a finishing position of 5.14, best among drivers who have contested all seven races.
- Spencer Gallagher finished a season-best fifth, his fourth top-10 result of 2018.
- Brandon Jones led a race-high 106 laps en route to finishing sixth, a season-best. His previous best finish of seventh came at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Jones now has three top 10s in 2018.
- Tyler Reddick advanced a race-high 18 positions, from 25th to seventh. It marked the second time this season Reddick has advanced the most positions from start to finish in a race. Reddick has five top 10s in 2018.
- Polesitter Cole Custer, who earned his first career pole this weekend, finished eighth in the highest-finishing Ford. After finishes of 14th and 39th to start the season, Custer has rattled off five consecutive top 10s.
- Ross Chastain matched his season-best finish of ninth, which he also finished at Daytona International Speedway.
- Rounding out the top 10 was Ryan Truex, who earned his first top-10 result since Atlanta Motor Speedway and third overall this season.
- Others who earned or tied season-best finishes included: Alex Labbe (11th); Shane Lee (14th); Ryan Sieg (15th); Joey Gase (16th); Joe Nemechek (19th); B.J. McLeod (20th); Spencer Boyd (25th); Timmy Hill (27th); Cody Ware (30th); and Ty Majeski (34th).
- Matt Tifft’s three-race streak of top-10 finishes came to an end after he finished 35th. That marks the second consecutive week the 35th-place finisher had a streak of three or more top-10 consecutive finishes come to an end (Justin Allgaier had a four-race streak end at Texas).
- A total of 26 cars finished the race, matching a season-low, set at Texas Motor Speedway.
- Three drivers led their first laps of the season at Bristol: Ryan Preece (39); Chase Briscoe (10); and Austin Cindric (1). Cindric was the final driver to finish on the lead lap.
- A total of 23 drivers improved on their starting position in the race.
- Morgan Shepherd failed to make the race.

- The next race will be Friday, April 20, with the ToyotaCare 250 at Richmond International Raceway in Virginia.
