Notes of Interest – Race/Weekend Recap
- This is Sebastian Vettel’s second Formula 1 victory of the season and the 49th of his career. Vettel is fourth all-time in victories, two behind fellow four-time champion Alain Prost, who has 51 wins.
- Vettel’s 49th win comes in his 200th race. He joins Michael Schumacher, Nico Rosberg, Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton as drivers who have all won in their 200th race.
- Vettel’s victory came 0.699 seconds ahead of Valtteri Bottas, marking the closest margin of victory in the 14 runnings of the Bahrain Grand Prix (previous record was 1.085 seconds, by Lewis Hamilton over Nico Rosberg).
- Vettel now has four victories in the Bahrain Grand Prix (2012, 2013, 2017 and 2018), the most of any driver. It marks the fourth grand prix in which he’s won four times, all in Asia (Bahrain, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore).
- This is the eighth season in which Vettel has won at least two races. He has earned multiple victories in every season in which he’s won a race, with the exception of 2008 (won single race).
- Vettel is the first driver to win the first two Formula 1 races of the season since Nico Rosberg won the first four races of 2016. It is the second time Vettel has won the first two races of the season (2011).
- The last time a driver won the first two races of the season and failed to win the championship was 1982, when Alain Prost won the South African and Brazilian Grand Prix and finished fourth in the points standings. Keke Rosberg won the title.
- This is the fifth time in which a driver has won the Bahrain Grand Prix in successive seasons. Vettel also accomplished this in 2012 and 2013. Fernando Alonso, Felipe Massa and Lewis Hamilton have also won two straight Bahrain Grand Prix.
- This marked Vettel’s 101st career podium finish, giving him a podium in more than half of the races in which he’s competed (200). Vettel is fourth all-time in podiums, now five behind third-place Alain Prost.
- Overall, Vettel has five podiums in the Bahrain Grand Prix.
- Vettel won the race from the pole position, the 30th time he’s won an F1 race from the pole. All 49 of Vettel’s victories have come from the top three starting positions.
- Vettel led a race-high 49 laps. It marked the sixth Bahrain Grand Prix that Vettel has led, which is tops among all drivers in the race’s history.
- This is Vettel’s 10th victory for Ferrari, pushing him past current teammate Kimi Raikkonen.
- German drivers have now won the Bahrain Grand Prix six times, including the last three. Vettel has four wins and Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg each have won.
- The winner of the Bahrain Grand Prix has led the most laps in a race in 12 of 14 races.
- This was Ferrari’s 231st victory and its sixth in the Bahrain Grand Prix, both of which lead all teams. It was the 252nd F1 win for an Italian constructor.
- Valtteri Bottas finished second, his first podium finish of the season and the 23rd of his career in 99 races. It is his second career podium in the Bahrain Grand Prix and a career-best, joining a third-place effort in 2017. Bottas has completed all but one lap in his six Bahrain Grand Prix.
- Mercedes has finished second in each race this season behind Vettel and Ferrari.
- Hamilton finished third after starting ninth, earning his second podium of 2018 and the 119th podium of his career. Hamilton has finished on the podium in five consecutive Bahrain Grand Prix and seven in 11 races. He’s completed every lap in but one.
- This was Hamilton’s 100th race for Mercedes. He competed in 110 races with McLaren.
- Pierre Gasly finished a career-best fourth in only his seventh career F1 race and first Bahrain Grand Prix. This marks the highest a French driver has finished in the Bahrain Grand Prix since Romain Grosjean finished third in 2013.
- Kevin Magnussen finished fifth, the best finish in four Bahrain Grand Prix, his best finish in 22 grand prix with Haas F1 Team, and the highest he’s finished since the 2014 Russian Grand Prix.
- Nico Hulkenberg finished sixth, his best finish in the Bahrain Grand Prix since 2014 (fifth) and fourth consecutive top-10 finish. Hulkenberg was the final driver to finish on the lead lap.
- Three-time Bahrain Grand Prix winner Fernando Alonso finished seventh, his best finish since a seventh-place result in 2012. Alonso was the first driver one lap down. His McLaren teammate, Stoffel Vandoorne, was eighth.

- Esteban Ocon earned 10th, the final points-paying position.

- Sergey Sirotkin finished 17th, the first time he’s completed a Formula 1 race.
- Red Bull Racing had a rough day, with Daniel Ricciardo out first and Max Verstappen out moments later. It marked the third time in five races (also 2017 Mexico and Abu Dhabi) and fourth time in the last 12 races that Ricciardo has been the first driver out of a Formula 1 race.
- Red Bull Racing became the first team since Manor Racing in the 2016 Mexican Grand Prix to suffer the first two retirements of a race.
