86 Stats in 86 Days Until 86th 24 Hours of Le Mans – Day 22, Fewest Cars to Finish Race (April 12, 2018)

The 86th annual 24 Hours of Le Mans is 65 days away! This is the 22nd day of the 86 Stats in 86 Days Until the 86th 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Each day from now until the Friday before the 24 Hours of Le Mans, we’ll post a list of stats related to the race. Some are well-known statistics, while others are a little more in-depth.

Here is a look at the top 10 races with the fewest cars to finish that year’s event (as with many of these generated lists, there is a tie for 10th, so in this case, all races with 13 cars or fewer are listed). Only six cars finished the 1931 classic, while only seven cars took the checkered flag in the 1927 and 1970 races.

Fewest Cars to Finish Race (cars that started race in parenthesis, not necessarily qualified*)
- 1931: 6 (26 cars)
- 1927: 7 (22 cars)
- 1970: 7 (51 cars)
- 1930: 9 (17 cars)
- 1932: 9 (25 cars)
- 1929: 10 (25 cars)
- 1971: 12 (49 cars)
- 1987: 12 (48 cars)
- 1991: 12 (38 cars)
- 1959: 13 (53 cars)
- 1956: 13 (49 cars)
- 1963: 13 (49 cars)
- 1926: 13 (41 cars)
- 1933: 13 (29 cars)

listed in order of cars finished from fewest, then by highest number of cars

Notes of Interest
- Nine cars actually finished the 1931 race, however, three cars were disqualified – one for not completing the final lap of the race, and two others for an illegal fuel stop. Of the six that were ultimately classified at the end of the 184-lap race, they represented five different classes. The overall winners, Lord Howe and Sir Henry Birkin, both of England, took the victory by seven laps.
- The Rover-BRM Turbine in the 1963 race, driven by Graham Hill and Richie Gunther, was not classified as it was categorized in the experimental class. However, the car completed 310 of the 339 laps and was running at the finish, therefore marked as a finisher. Had it been classified, it would have earned seventh place overall.
- The 1970 race had a dismal record in terms of finishing percentage. Only 14 percent (actually, 13.7 percent) of cars that started finished, the lowest finishing percentage in race history.
