Notes of Interest – Race Recap (Arizona Speedway)
- This is Donny Schatz’s series-leading fourth World of Outlaws A-Main feature victory of the season and the 265th of his career. (The World of Outlaws recently revised its victory totals to add victories for any full-field preliminary races.)
- Schatz’s victories have come at Volusia Speedway Park; The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Queen Creek.
- Schatz is the third driver to win a World of Outlaws A-Main at Arizona Speedway, joining Shane Stewart (2016) and Rico Abreu (2017).
- Schatz’s victory came from the 12th starting position, the second consecutive race in which a driver has set accomplished the feat. Sheldon Haudenschild had set the previous mark, coming from the ninth starting position at Bakersfield Speedway last month. Only one of the nine races has been won from the pole position.
- This is Schatz’s seventh top-five finish of the season and eighth top 10 in nine races. His worst finish was 14th at Stockton Dirt Track in California on March 17.
- Schatz led the final 10 laps of the A-Main. Schatz has now led four A-Main features this season for a total of 44 laps. He’s won all four races in which he’s led at least one lap in 2018.
- Joey Saldana earned a season-best finish of second, the second consecutive race in which he’s earned a season-best finish. His previous best was fourth at Bakersfield Speedway in California. He now has three top 10s in seven A-Main features this season.
- Logan Schuchart finished third, also a season-best. Schuchart made up a race-high 13 positions after starting from the 16th position. Schuchart’s previous best finish was eighth in Las Vegas.
- Shane Stewart finished fourth, his third consecutive finish of fourth or better and fourth top-five finish in nine A-Mains in 2018. Stewart also won his heat race, the fourth of the season, which ties him with Brian Brown for most this season.
- Cory Eliason rounded out the top-five. Eliason won his heat and the dash, and led the first lap of the A-Main en route to his fourth top-five finish of the season, and third in the last four A-Mains.
- David Gravel was sixth, his sixth top-10 finish of 2018. Sheldon Haudenschild notched his seventh top-10 finish with a seventh-place result.
- Paul McMahan finished eighth, his first top-10 finish since the third race of the DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park in February. He finished in the top 10 in each of the three races at Volusia.
- Jason Johnson finished ninth for his seventh top 10 of the season and third straight.
- Rounding out the top 10 was Brent Marks, who earned his first top 10 since the first race at Las Vegas.
- Drivers earning or tying their season-bests in an A-Main were: Jason Sides (14th); Greg Wilson (15th); Dane Lorenc (16th); Billy Chester (18th; first A-Main of season); Randy Waitman (19th; first A-Main of season); and Clyde Knipp (23rd).
- A total of 15 drivers finished the race on the lead lap.
- Three drivers have completed all 280 A-Main feature laps this season: Donny Schatz, Brad Sweet and Shane Stewart.
- Fast qualifier Ian Madsen scored his first heat victory of the season, bringing the total of numbers to win a heat this season to 19.
- The number of drivers that have competed in every A-Main this season has been cut by one, after Tim Shaffer missed his first A-Main of 2018.
- The next race will be Friday, April 13, at Jacksonville Speedway in Jacksonville, Illinois.
