WRC Event Recap: Rally Mexico, 2018 Season Thru Round 3 Statistics (March 13, 2018)

The 46th season of the World Rally Championship continued this weekend with the 15th annual Rally Mexico.

The scheduled 22-stage, 344.49-kilometer (214.06 miles) event was won by Sebastien Ogier, who won by one minute, 3.6 seconds over Spanish driver Dani Sordo. The event began Thursday, March 8, and concluded Sunday, March 11.

Here are some statistics related to the 2018 season after Round 3 as well as Rally Mexico.

@ Loeb and Tanak tied for the quickest time in the eighth stage, at nine minutes, 24.8 seconds on the 17.23-kilometer stage at Ortega.
^ Ogier and Tanak tied for the quickest time in the 10th stage, at one minute, 37.3 seconds at the 2.3-kilometer stage at Autodromo de Leon.

Notes of Interest (Rally Mexico):
- This was the 42nd career victory for Sebastien Ogier, driver of the No. 1 Ford Fiesta WRC, and his fourth in Rally Mexico. Ogier is second all-time in WRC victories, behind fellow Frenchman Sebastien Loeb (78). Ogier led from the 14th stage until the finish.
- Ogier has now won at least two WRC rallies in each of the last six seasons. He has won at least two rallies in eight of the last nine seasons, winless only in 2012.
- Ogier has won exactly one-third of his career WRC rallies (42 of 126; 33.3 percent).
- Ogier’s five stage victories were a season-best (had four at Rallye Monte-Carlo) and brought his career total to 510 stage wins, the 10th most all-time. He is 19 behind Stig Blomqvist (529) for ninth all-time.
- Ogier now has 67 WRC podiums. That is fifth all-time, and two behind Mikko Hirvonen (69) for fourth place all-time.
- Ogier shared the victory with co-driver Julien Ingrassi; together, they have 42 victories.
- France has claimed 187 WRC driver victories, nine more than the country of Finland.
- Dani Sordo and Carlos del Barrio finished second in the No. 6 Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC, the top-finishing Hyundai. It marked Sordo’s first podium of the season and first since the 2017 Rally de Portugal last May. Sordo was the class leader from the third through the 10th stage.
- Sordo won three stages to bring his career total to 172. He now has 43 podiums in 154 WRC rallies.
- Sordo is the first Spanish driver this year with a podium as well as a stage victory.
- Defending Rally Mexico winner Kris Meeke and co-driver Paul Nagle were third in the highest-finishing Citroen, the No. 10 Citroen C3 WRC. It marked his first podium since winning the 2017 Rally de Espana last October. Meeke has two finishes of fourth or better this season.
- Meeke won five stages to bring his career total to 76. He now has 12 podiums in 88 WRC rallies.
- Andreas Mikkelesen scored a stage victory en route to finishing fourth overall. He has won one stage in each of the first three WRC events this season.
- Nine-time WRC champion Sebastien Loeb finished fifth in his first WRC rally since the 2015 Rallye Monte-Carlo. Loeb won three stages to extend his all-time record to 908 stage wins. Loeb was the class leader from the 11th through 13th stages.
- Rally Sweden winner Thierry Neuville won the first stage and was the class leader after the 2.53-kilometer win in the Street Stage GTO. However, that marked the only stage win for the Neuville, who entered the event tied for the most stage wins in 2018 (10 with Ott Tanak). Neuville finished sixth.
- Tanak finished 14th overall and 10th in class, retiring after engine trouble. Tanak, however, was the winner of the power stage, the 11.07-kilometer stage at the end of the rally.
- Teemu Suninen was not classified at the end of the rally, however, he also picked up a stage victory, the 1.11-kilometer Street Stage Leon (fifth stage).
- Citroen’s eight stage victories were the most for the French marque of any WRC event in 2018 (only had four total in the first two WRC events, at Monte-Carlo and Sweden). Hyundai added five stage wins and is the season leader with 19.
- All 22 scheduled stages were contested. It marked the most stages completed in Rally Mexico since 2014 (also 22).
