Notes of Interest – Race Recap (FVP Outlaw Showdown, Night 2)
- This is Donny Schatz’s series-best third World of Outlaws
A-Main victory of the season and the 252nd of his career. He won two races at
Volusia Speedway Park in February.
- Schatz now has 12 victories in the 39 World of Outlaws
races at Las Vegas, including at least one in each of the last three seasons
and five out of the last six. The only year he hasn’t won a race since 2013 at
Las Vegas came in 2015. He swept the races in 2017.
- Schatz’s victory came from the fifth-starting position,
the first time this season a driver has won from that starting spot. To date, no
driver has won an A-Main feature from the pole this season.
- Schatz has not finished lower than fourth in an A-Main
feature this season. His worst finish was fourth in the season-opening race at
Volusia Speedway Park on February 9. His average finish in five races is 1.8.
- This is Sheldon Haudenschild’s fourth podium finish of the
season and first time he has finished second. He led the opening 25 laps of
Thursday’s A-main. His worst finish of the season was seventh in the second
race of the year. His average finish is 2.8.
- Several drivers in the top 10 earned season-best finishes
Thursday. David Gravel earned his third top-five finish of the season with a
third-place result, topping previous best finishes of fifth twice; he moved
from eighth to sixth in points. Brian Brown scored his first top-five effort
with a fourth-place run, his second top-10 of the 2018 campaign; he moved into
the top 10 in points. And Aaron Reutzel was fifth in his first A-Main of the
year.
- Jason Meyers was seventh, a season-best following a
10th-place finish in his season debut Wednesday, with Logan Schuchart earning
the hard charger award for climbing 14 positions to eighth, his first top-10
result of 2018. Joey Saldana also earned his first top-10 finish of the season
with a ninth-place effort.
- Others with season-bests included Ian Madsen (11th); Sam
Hafertepe (13th); Hunter Schuerenberg (15th, first race of 2018); Kyle Hirst
(17th, first race of 2018); Willie Croft (21st); and fast qualifier Jacob Allen
(24th).
- Jason Johnson, who entered the race with Schatz and
Haudenschild as the only other driver with a top-10 finish in the first four
races, took the checkered flag 20th.
- Paul McMahan, one of 14 drivers who entered Thursday’s
event having made all four previous A-Main features, did not compete in the
A-Main.
- A total of 19 drivers finished the race on the lead lap,
with Cory Eliason the final driver on the same lap as Schatz.
- Four drivers have completed all 150 A-Main feature laps
this season: Donny Schatz, Sheldon Haudenschild, Brad Sweet and Shane Stewart.
Jason Johnson, Daryn Pittman and Kerry Madsen, who had competed every lap in
the first four races, completed 29, 14 and 12 laps, respectively.
- The next race will be Saturday, March 3, with the SoCal
Showdown at Perris Auto Speedway in California. The next eight races will be held
