Notes of Interest – Race Recap (FVP Outlaw Showdown, Night 1)
- This was Sheldon Haudenschild’s second World of Outlaws A-Main victory of
the season and second of his career. He won the season-opening DIRTcar
Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Florida.
- Haudenschild is now tied with Donny Schatz in victories
this season. They are the only two drivers to win A-Main features so far.
- Haudenschild’s victory came from the second starting
position, the highest a driver has started and won a race this season. No
driver has started from the pole position this season and won.
- This is Haudenschild’s third finish of third or better
this season, and his fourth top-10 in as many races. Schatz has finished in the
top five in all four of his events this season, with a second-place run
Wednesday night.
- Brad Sweet finished third, his third consecutive A-Main
finish of fourth or better. His only finish outside the top four this season
was the opener at Volusia.
- Tim Shaffer finished fourth for his second top-five finish
of 2018. His season-best third came in the second race at Volusia.
- David Gravel tied his season-best finish of fifth, which
also came in the second race of the season. He now has three top 10s in the
last three races.
- Jason Johnson, who finished sixth, also notched his fourth
top-10 of the season, joining Haudenschild and Schatz as the only other driver
to finish in the top 10 in every race so far in 2018. He hasn’t finished worse
than seventh, with a best finish of second in the second race at Volusia.
- Two other drivers who have competed at Volusia and Las
Vegas that earned their season-best finishes were Daryn Pittman (eighth) and Brent
Marks (ninth). Marks was the event’s hard charger; it marked the second time
this season he earned the award.
- For the first time this season, Shane Stewart failed to
win a heat race. He was fourth in his heat. He finished 12th in the A-Main.
- With the shift in location from the Southeast to the West
Coast comes the obvious – different cars and different drivers. Seven drivers
made their A-Main season debuts Wednesday, with Jason Meyers the highest
finishing debutant at 10th. Also competing for the first time were Mark
Dobmeier (11th); Dominic Scelzi (15th); Austin McCarl (19th); Willie Croft
(22nd); Sam Hafertepe (23rd); and Terry McCarl (26th).
- Five drivers who competed in the first three races did not
compete Wednesday: Greg Hodnett, Jason Sides, Lucas Wolfe, Dave Blaney and Greg
Wilson. That leaves only 14 drivers who have competed in every A-Main of 2018.
- A total of 16 drivers finished the race on the lead lap,
with Ian Madsen the final driver on the same lap as Haudenschild.
- Seven drivers have completed all 120 A-Main feature laps
this season: Sheldon Haudenschild, Shane Stewart, Donny Schatz, Jason Johnson,
Kerry Madsen, Daryn Pittman and Brad Sweet. Kraig Kinser and Paul McMahan, the
other two drivers who entered Wednesday’s A-Main having completed all the laps
this season, completed 29 and 12 laps, respectively.
- The next race will be Thursday, March 1, with the second
night of the FVP Outlaw Showdown at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
