Notes of Interest – Race Recap (Night 1 at Thunderbowl Raceway)
- This is Aaron Reutzel’s first career World of Outlaws
A-Main victory. He becomes the 130th driver to win an A-Main Feature and second
driver this season to score his maiden win, joining Sheldon Haudenschild.
- Reutzel is the third driver to win an A-Main feature this
season, joining Haudenschild and Donny Schatz.
- Reutzel is the second driver to win a race from the fourth
starting position, joining Donny Schatz, who raced to victory from fourth in
Night 3 of the DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park on February 11.
- Reutzel becomes the 15th driver to win a World of Outlaws
A-Main at Thunderbowl Raceway. David Gravel was the last first-time track
winner, when he scored his first Thunderbowl victory in 2016.
- Reutzel is the first driver this season to win on a
third-mile oval. The previous five World of Outlaws events had been contested
on half-mile tracks.
- Cory Eliason earned a season-best second-place finish, his
second top-five finish of the season and his first since the season opener at
Volusia Speedway Park exactly one month earlier (his previous three races he
finished 17th, 20th and 19th). Eliason was the polesitter and led 22 laps, the
first race he has led this season.
- Eliason is the fifth driver in six events this season to
win a dash. Brian Brown is the only driver to win a dash twice this season.
Eliason also won the fourth heat, becoming the 15th driver this season to win a
heat.
- Donny Schatz finished third, extending his streak to six
consecutive top-four finishes to start the 2018 campaign. He is now the only
driver this season to finish in the top 10 in all six races.
- Dominic Scelzi scored a season-best fourth-place finish
and first top-10 finish in three races this season.
- Rounding out the top five was Carson Macedo, making his
season debut with a fifth-place effort.
- Others with their season-best A-Main finishes were Daryn
Pittman (6th); Tim Kaeding (8th; season debut); Giovanni Scelzi (11th; season
debut); Willie Croft (14th); Dane Lorenc (21st; season debut); and DJ Netto
(25th).
- Sheldon Haudenschild, who led eight laps, hit the wall
while leading and finished 23rd. It marked the first race this season
Haudenschild did not finish at least seventh or better, and the first race he
did not complete every lap. Haudenschild did, however, extend his series-best
laps led mark this season to 55 and races led mark to five, and set a track
record in qualifying to become the only driver to serve as fast qualifier twice
this season.
- Willie Croft won the Last Chance Showdown, becoming the
sixth driver in as many events to win the Last Chance/B-Main race this season.
- Chase Johnson won the C-Main but did not advance to the
A-Main. None of the three C-Main race winners this year has advanced to the
A-Main.
- Kraig Kinser and Kerry Madsen failed to advance to the A-Main
for the first time this season. Only 11 drivers have competed in all six A-Main
features in 2018.
- A total of 17 drivers finished the race on the lead lap,
with Jason Johnson the final driver on the same lap as Reutzel.
- Three drivers have completed all 185 A-Main feature laps
this season: Donny Schatz, Brad Sweet and Shane Stewart.
- The next race will be Saturday, March 10, with another
night of racing at Thunderbowl Raceway.
