Each day from now until the Saturday before the Indianapolis 500,
we’ll post a list of stats related to the race. Some are well-known statistics,
while others are a little more in-depth.
Here is a look at the states in which the winning drivers were
born. A total of 20 states have been represented, with 50 drivers representing
74 victories in 101 races.

Notes of Interest
- Indiana and California lead all states with seven different
drivers to win the race; Alexander Rossi gave California its seventh different
winning Indianapolis 500 winner in 2016, becoming the first California winner
since Jim Rathmann in 1960.
- Indiana’s last victory came in 1940, when Wilbur Shaw of Shelbyville
won his third Indianapolis 500. That also marked Indiana’s ninth Indianapolis
500 win.
- Kansas is tied with Indiana for nine victories, with Rick Mears
(4), Johnny Rutherford (3) and Rodger Ward (2) giving The Sunflower State its
wins. Mears and Ward were raised in California after their families moved
there, while Rutherford has spent the majority of his life in Texas.
