2018 Chili Bowl Statistics, Night 2 (January 10, 2018)

The 32nd annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals presented by General Tire at Tulsa (Okla.) Expo Raceway continued Wednesday night, January 10, with the second of four preliminary/qualifying race nights heading into Saturday’s big event, the 55-lap A-Main.

In parenthesis, following the name of the winning driver, is the number corresponding to the number of heats/qualifiers/features they’ve won during this event heading into Saturday’s A-Main.

Here is a quick recap of the second night of action in the Chili Bowl.

Notes of Interest:
-       - Rico Abreu has punched his ticket to his sixth Saturday night A-Main, and fourth in a row. Abreu is a two-time winner of the Chili Bowl Nationals, having won the race in 2015 and 2016. He now has three preliminary night feature wins, tying him with Christopher Bell, Jerry Coons Jr., Kevin Doty, Tracy Hines and Kevin Swindell.
-       - Abreu was one of two drivers to win on multiple occasions Wednesday night, as he also triumphed in his heat and qualifying races. Tyler Thomas also won his heat and qualifier races. Abreu joins Tuesday night’s winner, Kyle Larson, as a qualifier and A-Feature winner through two nights.
-       - Thomas finished second in the A-Feature, having led three times for 10 laps after a stellar battle with Abreu. With his efforts, he locked himself into his third consecutive Saturday night A-Main. His best finish was seventh his rookie season – 2016.
-       - Kevin Thomas Jr., the third-place finisher, also led a single lap and will be competing in his first Saturday night A-Main.
-       - Sammy Swindell broke his tie with Dave Darland for most heat race victories, notching a 13th career heat win in the third heat. Others who also added another heat race victory to their credit included Brady Bacon (6), Brandon Waelti (5), Tyler Thomas (4), Rico Abreu (4), Chris Windom (4), Chase Stockon (3), Jeb Sessums (2) and Colby Copeland (2). Bacon’s sixth victory makes him the 19th driver to earn at least that many heat victories in the Chili Bowl.

-       - Kory Schudy and Kevin Thomas Jr. were all first-time Chili Bowl heat winners. A total of 334 drivers have won at least one heat race in the history of the Chili Bowl Nationals.
