Event Recap: 2017-18 Formula E New York City ePrix, Race 1 Statistics (July 14, 2018)

Event statistics following the 11th and penultimate round of the 2017-18 FIA Formula E season, the New York City ePrix, Race 1, on the temporary 14-turn, 2.373-kilometer (1.475-mile) Brooklyn Street Circuit on the streets of Brooklyn, New York.

Lucas di Grassi earned his second consecutive victory and sixth straight podium, leading the final 20 laps after passing teammate Daniel Abt on Lap 24. Abt finished second, ahead of polesitter Sebastien Buemi. Jean-Eric Vergne finished fifth, and wrapped up his first career title. He leads by 31 points with a final race to go, but only 29 points are up for grabs in Race 2.

Saturday’s race marked the ninth race of the 2018 calendar year (first two rounds in Hong Kong were held at the end of 2017).

Notes of Interest (Race Results)
- This is Lucas di Grassi’s second Formula E victory of the season and the eighth of his career.
- Di Grassi has won at least two races in each of the last three Formula E seasons, and at least one race in all four seasons. He won a career-high three races during the 2015-2016 season and two races in each of the last two seasons. Di Grassi also won once during the 2014-2015 season.
- All eight of di Grassi’s victories have come on different tracks. This is his third victory on a North American circuit and second in the United States. He won at Long Beach Street Circuit in 2016 as well as the Montreal Street Circuit in 2017, en route to winning the championship.
- Di Grassi is one of five drivers to win a race this season – all five drivers have multiple race victories. Jean-Eric Vergne has a series-high three wins, while Daniel Abt, Sam Bird and Felix Rosenqvist each have two.
- Di Grassi’s victory came from the 11th starting position, the furthest back a driver has started from and won this season. The previous worst starting position to win was fifth.
- This is Di Grassi’s first victory from the 11th starting position, and the first victory outside the top three starting rows. His worst starting position en route to a victory was 15th at Mexico City during the 2016-2017 season.
- All together, this marks the first time a driver has won from the 11th starting position in the 45-race history of Formula E.
- Di Grassi led 20 laps, marking the 15th Formula E race he’s led.
- Di Grassi has finished on the podium in six consecutive Formula E races – scoring four straight runner-up finishes followed by two straight wins – and now has 26 podiums in his career.
- Di Grassi now has an average finish of 8.0 in 11 races this season, but in the last six races, the average finish has been 1.67. Di Grassi has moved into third in the points standings.
- After failing to lead any of the first seven races, di Grassi has now led three of the last four races, and has now led 44 laps during the season, the third most behind Jean-Eric Vergne and Daniel Abt.
- Daniel Abt finished second, earning his third podium of the 2017-2018 season, tying the most he’s earned in a season (had three podiums in 2015-2016 season). Abt led 18 laps, and has now led four races for 88 laps, making him second in laps led this season behind Jean-Eric Vergne’s 137 laps led.
- In his career, Abt – fifth in the points standings – now has seven podiums.
- Sebastien Buemi finished third, which marks his fourth podium, seventh top-five and ninth top-10 finish during the 2017-2018 season.
- Tom Dillmann finished fourth, becoming the 21st driver to score points during the 2017-2018 season. It also marked a career-best finish of fourth for the French driver, whose previous best result was seventh in Race 2 of the New York City ePrix during the 2016-2017 season.
- Jean-Eric Vergne earned the championship with a fifth-place finish, advancing a race-high 13 positions after starting 18th. Vergne has not finished outside the top 10 in any of the 11 races this season. It marked Vergne’s 10th top-five result of the season; through 11 races, he has an average finish of 3.81.
- Nick Heidfeld finished sixth, his second straight sixth-place effort and fifth top 10 of the season.
- Andre Lotterer finished seventh, his fifth consecutive top-10 finish and sixth overall this season.
- Maro Engel finished eighth for the third time this season; he now has six top 10s.
- Sam Bird, second in the points standings, finished ninth, his sixth consecutive top-10 finish and 10th overall this season.
- Nicolas Prost finished 10th, his first points finish since the Santiago ePrix in Chile in February. Overall, it marked his fifth top-10 result of the season.
- Felix Rosenqvist finished 14th, after setting the fastest lap. After top-five finishes in four of the first six races, he’s failed to finish in a points-paying position in each of the last three races.
- Four drivers failed to finish the race: Alex Lynn, Jose Maria Lopez, Nelson Piquet Jr. and Mitch Evans. It marked Evans’s first retirement of the season, while Piquet failed to finish for the fourth time in five races.
- The next FIA Formula E race is Sunday, July 15, Race 2 of the New York City ePrix at the Brooklyn Street Circuit. It marks the season finale of the 12-race season, which began in December 2017.
