Event Recap: 2017-18 Formula E Rome ePrix Statistics (April 14, 2018)

Event statistics following the seventh round of the 2017-18 FIA Formula E season, the CBMM Niobium Rome ePrix on the temporary, 2.860-kilometer (1.777-mile) Circuito Cittadino Dell’EUR on the Streets of Rome, Italy.

Sam Bird inherited the lead from early race leader Felix Rosenqvist after the Swedish driver retired due to suspension problems, and lead the final 12 laps to best former series champion Lucas di Grassi by nearly a second. It marked Bird’s second victory of the season. Andre Lotterer rounded out the podium.

It was also the fifth race of the 2018 calendar year (first two rounds in Hong Kong were held at the end of 2017).

Notes of Interest
- This is Sam Bird’s second Formula E victory of the season and the seventh of his career.
- Bird has won two races in three of the four Formula E seasons; he won one race in the 2015-16 season.
- Bird has now won races on six different courses spanning six countries and four continents.
- Bird’s victory came from the second starting position, the third time he’s won a race from second and fifth time he’s won a race from the pole position. Both of his victories this season have come from second on the grid.
- Bird becomes the third driver this season with two victories in Formula E competition, joining Felix Rosenqvist and Jean-Eric Vergne. Daniel Abt has one victory.
- Bird has finished on the podium in four of seven races this season – a series best – and in the top five on six occasions. His lowest finish was 17th in Mexico City, the final driver to complete the race.
- Bird has completed all seven races in which he’s contested this season, as well as all 275 laps completed in Formula E competition this season.
- Bird has led three races this season for a total of 36 laps.
- Bird moved to second in the points standings, up one position from third.
- Former series champion Lucas di Grassi came home second for the second consecutive race, marking the first time he’s scored back-to-back podiums since the 2016-17 season at Mexico City (Race #4) and Monaco (Race #5). It was also di Grassi’s second podium of the season, and third consecutive race in which he finished (retired from the two before that).
- Andre Lotterer also scored his second podium finish of the season with a third-place effort. Lotterer has been classified in each of the last four races, after a DNQ and mechanical failure in two of the first three races.
- Lotterer’s fellow German countryman, Daniel Abt, was fourth, notching his third top-five finish of the season. It marked the first time since the 2015-16 season at Long Beach that two German drivers finished in the top four, and fifth time two Germans finished in the top five in a race in Formula E history.
- Abt also moved into fifth in the points standings.
- Points leader Jean-Eric Vergne saw his advantage slip to 18 points over Sam Bird after finishing fifth. Vergne is the only driver to finish in the top five in all seven races this year, and his average finish of 3.29 leads all drivers.
- The series all-time leader in victories, Sebastien Buemi, finished sixth.
- Jerome D’Ambrosio recorded a season-best finish of seventh, and led his first lap of the season. He was the second driver of the race to lead for the first time this season, pushing the number of drivers to lead at least one race to 12 (22 drivers have competed in at least one race this season).
- Mitch Evans also led his first lap of the season, and finished ninth, his fourth consecutive points-paying position.
- Four drivers retired, including polesitter Felix Rosenqvist, who led a race-high 19 laps (which doubled his season total going into the race). Rosenqvist, who led the points standings earlier this season, retired due to suspension problems, his second retirement in the last three races (and third in 19 career races). He fell to third in the standings, still with a comfortable margin over fourth-place Buemi.
- Rosenqvist started from the pole for the third race this season, tying the mark set by Jean-Eric Vergne in Uruguay.
- A total of 20 drivers have scored points this season.
- The next FIA Formula E race is April 28 in Paris, France.
