Each day from now until the Saturday before the Indianapolis 500, we’ll post a list of stats related to the race. Some are well-known statistics, while others are a little more in-depth.
Here is a look at the drivers who were running at the finish the most times. The top 12 drivers have been running at the finish 10 times or more; there’s a four-way tie for ninth place. A.J. Foyt and Al Unser lead all drivers with 18, with Helio Castroneves close behind at 16.
- A.J. Foyt: 18 (35 races; 51.4 percent)
- Al Unser: 18 (27 races; 66.7 percent)
- Helio Castroneves: 16 (17 races; 94.1 percent)
- Al Unser Jr.: 12 (19 races; 63.1 percent)
- Tony Kanaan: 12 (16 races; 75 percent)
- Johnny Rutherford: 11 (24 races; 45.8 percent)
- Bobby Unser: 11 (19 races; 57.9 percent)
- Scott Dixon: 11 (15 races; 73.3 percent)
- Gordon Johncock: 10 (24 races; 41.7 percent)
- Buddy Lazier: 10 (20 races; 50 percent)
- Michael Andretti: 10 (16 races; 62.5 percent)

Notes of Interest
- Eleven of the 12 drivers on the list have won the race at least once. Michael Andretti is the only driver without a victory.
- Ed Carpenter and Marco Andretti can add their names to the list in 2018 by finishing the race; each driver has been running at the finish nine times in their career.
- Helio Castroneves has finished the highest percentage of races of any driver in Indianapolis 500 history that has finished all but one race (94.1 percent). Only drivers that have finished every race in which they've competed are ahead of him. Castroneves's only DNF was in 2006, when he was involved in an accident just past the midway point.
