Each day from now until the Saturday before the Indianapolis 500, we’ll post a list of stats related to the race. Some are well-known statistics, while others are a little more in-depth.
Here is a look at the drivers who have led the Indianapolis 500 seven times or more. A.J. Foyt, fourth all-time in laps led, has led 13 races, as has Tony Kanaan, who ironically is driving for Foyt in this year’s Verizon IndyCar Series.

Notes of Interest
- A total of 222 drivers have led at least one race in the previous 101 Indianapolis 500s. Three drivers – Fernando Alonso, Max Chilton and James Davison – all led their first race in 2017.
- Tony Kanaan led a record seven consecutive races in his first seven Indianapolis 500s from 2002 to 2008. After three consecutive races without leading a lap, he’s led each of the last six races.
- Alex Tagliani led six consecutive races between 2011 and 2016. He did not compete in the 2017 race, therefore one race shy of making the above list and one race off Tony Kanaan’s record of seven straight races led. Tagliani and Will Power each have six, the most among drivers not on this list that have raced in the 500 this decade.
