George Francis “Pat” Flaherty, the 1956 Indianapolis 500 winner, was born on this day in 1926 in Glendale, California. Flaherty made only 18 IndyCar starts in his career, winning three races. His 1956 Indy 500 win was the first IndyCar race to be sanctioned by USAC, and he backed that victory up the following race at The Milwaukee Mile.

The California-born driver has had quite the career, both from a driving and management standpoint. Gordon earned class victories in America’s twice-around-the-clock Rolex 24 At Daytona; bested open-wheel fields in the mid and late 1990s (and came within a lap of winning the Indianapolis 500); triumphed during a long stock car career (where he raced and co-owned a team); and still shines in a series he founded (super trucks). Needless to say, Gordon has competed in a number of different racing disciplines and been successful in all of them.
