Event Recap: 2018 NASCAR Truck Series Statistics from Bristol (August 16, 2018)

Event statistics following the 16th race of the 2018 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season, the UNOH 200 at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee.

Regular season champion Johnny Sauter passed John Hunter Nemechek with five laps remaining to win his series-leading fifth race of the season. Sauter, who had battled with Stewart Friesen for second for several laps, took command after Nemechek slowed following a dominating performance; he had led a race-high 104 laps and won both stages. Friesen was second, ahead of Nemechek, Parker Kligerman and Todd Gilliland. Sauter – who finished second in last weekend’s race by less than a car length to Brett Moffitt – heads into the series’ playoffs as the points leader.

Notes of Interest – Race Recap (Bristol Motor Speedway)
- This was the 21st NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway.
- This is Johnny Sauter’s series-leading fifth NASCAR Camping World Truck Series victory of the season and the 22nd of his career. He has also won races at Daytona International Speedway; Dover International Speedway; Charlotte Motor Speedway; and Texas Motor Speedway.
- Sauter broke a tie with Brett Moffitt for most victories this season; the pair each had four wins going into the race. Kyle Busch has won two races, with five other drivers – John Hunter Nemechek, Noah Gragson, Justin Haley and Ben Rhodes – winning one race.
- Sauter’s five victories this season mark the most he’s recorded in a single season. His previous season-high came in 2017, when he earned four wins. Overall, Sauter has wins in nine different seasons, including each of the last three.
- This is Sauter’s first victory at Bristol Motor Speedway. He now has victories at 13 tracks. His win at Charlotte in May was also his first win at the mile-and-a-half.
- In addition to his 22 victories, this marked Sauter’s 100th top-five finish in the Truck Series. He also has 153 career top 10s.
- Sauter is the oldest driver to win a race this season. Four of his five victories have come since his 40th birthday on May 1.
- Sauter claimed the regular season championship. Overall, he recorded 10 top threes, 12 top fives and 13 top 10s, and has an average finish of 5.38 – all series-bests through 16 races. His 12 top fives are two fewer than his season-best of 14, set in 2010. He finished the 2017 season with an average finish of 5.2.
- Stewart Friesen finished second, his third runner-up finish of the season (Texas Motor Speedway and Kentucky Speedway). Overall, he has five top threes, seven top fives and 11 top 10s (including each of the last five races).
- John Hunter Nemechek finished third, after winning both stages and leading a race-high 104 laps. It marked Nemechek’s second straight third-place effort (Michigan International Speedway) and third top three of 2018. He also has five top fives and eight top 10s.
- Parker Kligerman finished fourth, his first top five and second top 10 in six races this season.
- For the second straight race, Todd Gilliland finished fifth, the highest finishing Toyota driver. Gilliland now has three top fives and eight top 10s in 2018.
- A total of five drivers led the race. They traded the lead six times, marking the fewest lead changes in a race in 2018.
- A total of 11 drivers finished on the lead lap. Dalton Sargeant was the 11th and final driver to finish all 200 laps.
- Eighteen drivers improved on their starting position in the race.
- The next race will be Sunday, August 26, with the Chevrolet Silverado 250 at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada.
