Event Recap: 2018 IndyCar Series Statistics from Iowa (July 8, 2018)

Event statistics following the 11th race of the 2018 Verizon IndyCar Series season, the Iowa Corn 300 at Iowa Speedway in Newton, Iowa.

James Hinchcliffe made a late-race pass on Josef Newgarden and stayed out on track when others pitted during the final caution, which was extended an additional lap, forcing a yellow and checkered flag finish. Spencer Pigot finished a career-best second, making up a race-high 16 positions, with Takuma Sato taking a season-best third. Josef Newgarden, who led the majority of the race, finished fourth, ahead of Hinchcliffe’s teammate, Robert Wickens, who finished fifth for the second straight race.

Notes of Interest – Race Recap (Iowa Corn 300)
- This is James Hinchcliffe’s first victory of the 2018 IndyCar Series season and the sixth of his career.
- This is Hinchcliffe’s second victory at Iowa Speedway, the first track at which he’s won at multiple times. Iowa is the only oval track at which Hinchcliffe has won. Overall, Hinchcliffe has victories at five different tracks.
- Hinchcliffe is one of seven drivers to win an IndyCar Series race this season. Josef Newgarden leads all drivers with three wins, while Scott Dixon and Will Power have two wins each. Sebastien Bourdais, Alexander Rossi and Ryan Hunter-Reay each have one victory.
- This is the second consecutive season and fourth overall that Hinchcliffe has won at least one race. He also won a single race in 2015 and 2017, and a season-high three races in 2013. It marks the first time Hinchcliffe has won races in back-to-back seasons.
- Hinchcliffe is the third driver to win multiple IndyCar races at Iowa Speedway. Ryan Hunter-Reay owns a race record three wins, while Dario Franchitti owns two wins. Overall, eight drivers have won in 12 IndyCar races at Iowa Speedway.
- Hinchcliffe moved from 11th to eighth in the points standings, despite missing a race (Indianapolis 500). He is now one point ahead of Simon Pagenaud, who is ninth in the standings.

- This is Hinchcliffe’s third victory with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports; he also won the 2015 race at NOLA Motorsports Park in Avondale, Louisiana, and the 2017 Long Beach Grand Prix. It is his first oval win with SPM.
