Event Recap: 2018 Formula 1 World Championship from Hungarian Grand Prix (July 29, 2018)

Event statistics following the 12th race of the 2018 FIA Formula 1 World Championship season, the Hungarian Grand Prix (formally known as the Formula 1 Rolex Magyar Magydij) at the 14-turn, 4.381-kilometer (2.722-mile) Hungaroring in Mogyorod, Hungary.

Points leader Lewis Hamilton extended his championship lead in dominating fashion, winning over Ferrari teammates Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen for his series-leading fifth race of the season, record sixth win in the Hungarian Grand Prix and the 67th of his career. He led Vettel – the only other driver to lead the race – by 17.123 seconds, with Raikkonen scoring his fifth consecutive podium.

Notes of Interest - Race/Weekend Recap
- This marked the 34th Hungarian Grand Prix (33rd as part of the Formula 1 calendar) – all at the Hungaroring.
- This is Lewis Hamilton’s series-leading fifth Formula 1 World Championship victory of the season, including his second in a row, and the 67th of his career. He remains second all-time in F1 World Championship grand prix victories.
- Hamilton’s has also won the Azerbaijan, Spanish, French and German Grand Prix this season. He is one of four drivers with victories in 2018. Sebastian Vettel has four, while Daniel Ricciardo has two wins and Max Verstappen has one.
- Hamilton has won a record six Hungarian Grand Prix; he also won the race in 2007, 2009, 2012, 2013 and 2016. However, he’s never won an F1 title in a season in which he’s won the Hungarian Grand Prix (2008, 2014, 2015 and 2017).
- The Hungarian Grand Prix is the first grand prix in Europe in which Hamilton has won at least six times, and the third overall. He also has six victories in the Canadian and United States Grand Prix. Only Michael Schumacher has more six wins in a single grand prix more than twice, and more wins overall in a single grand prix (eight in the French Grand Prix and seven in the Canadian and San Marino Grand Prix).
- Hamilton has won five or more grand prix in each of the last five seasons, and six overall (also won five races in 2008). The only season in which Hamilton has won five or more races in a season and not won the championship was in 2016, when he won 10 races only to lose the title by five points to Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg. Overall, Hamilton has won in all 12 of his Formula 1 seasons.
- Hamilton won from the pole position, the 43rd time he’s won from the top starting position. Overall, Hamilton has 77 pole positions, including five this season. He’s earned at least five poles in each of the last six seasons – including a career-high 12 in 2016 – and in eight of 12 career seasons.
- Overall, Hamilton has won 59 races from the front row, and 65 within the front two rows.
- Four of Hamilton’s six Hungarian Grand Prix victories have come from the pole position (2007, 2012, 2013 and 2018). He also won from second (2016) and fourth (2009).
- This marks the second consecutive season in which the polesitter won the Hungarian Grand Prix. Sebastian Vettel won from the pole in 2017. Overall, the Hungarian Grand Prix has been won from the pole 15 times.
- This is Hamilton’s series-leading ninth podium of the season, and the 126th of his career. He now has seven podiums at the Hungaroring.
- Hamilton led a race-high 56 laps, marking the eighth race he’s led this season, tying him for the most with Sebastian Vettel. Hamilton has led 233 laps this season, the second most behind Vettel’s 297.
- In the 10 races in which he’s been classified, Hamilton’s average finish is 2.18, the best of all drivers. His worst finish in a race in which he’s been classified is fifth (Canadian Grand Prix) – therefore having earned points-paying finishes in 11 of 12 races this season – and he’s finished all but one race (not classified in Austrian Grand Prix).
- Hamilton improved his lead in the points standings, which now stands at 24 points, the largest margin by a points leader this season.
- This marked Mercedes’s 81st Formula 1 grand prix victory, and the fifth of the season. Mercedes also has three wins in the Hungarian Grand Prix – 2013, 2016 and 2018. Mercedes remains fourth all-time in F1 victories, 33 wins behind Williams.
