Event Recap: 2018 Formula 1 World Championship from Austrian Grand Prix (July 1, 2018)

Event statistics following the ninth race of the 2018 FIA Formula 1 World Championship season, the Austrian Grand Prix at the 10-turn, 4.318-kilometer (2.688-mile) Red Bull Ring in Spielberg.

Max Verstappen took Red Bull Racing to victory at its home track, taking command after early leader Lewis Hamilton made his first pit stop, and led from Lap 26 on for his fourth career grand prix victory. Kimi Raikkonen finished second, with Sebastian Vettel taking the points lead with a third-place effort. The race saw attrition hit several of the heavy-hitters, with Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton and polesitter Valtteri Bottas each retiring, as well as Verstappen’s teammate, Daniel Ricciardo, who was celebrating his 29th birthday.

Notes of Interest
- This is Verstappen's first victory of the season and the fourth of his career. His last victory was the 2017 Mexican Grand Prix at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
- This is Verstappen's first victory at Red Bull Ring. Verstappen has won at four different tracks.
- Verstappen gave Red Bull Racing its first victory at the track which bears its name, the Red Bull Ring.
- This marks only the second time a driver has won a grand prix at Red Bull Ring from outside the top three (David Coulthard won after starting seventh in 2001).
- Sebastian Vettel finished third, and took the points lead over Lewis Hamilton by one point.
- In the 50th race for Haas, Romain Grosjean was fourth and Kevin Magnussen was fifth. It marked the most points Haas has ever scored in a grand prix. It was also Grosjean's first finish in the points this season.
- Force India, in its 200th grand prix, were right behind Haas, with Esteban Ocon taking sixth and Sergio Perez landing seventh.
- Despite leading the first 25 laps, Lewis Hamilton failed to finish the race, ending a streak of 33 consecutive races finishing in the points. Had he completed an additional lap, he would have been classified for a 34th consecutive race.
