Notes of Interest – Race/Weekend Recap
- This is Scott McLaughlin’s fifth Supercars Championship victory of the season and the 21st of his career. McLaughlin has won four consecutive races, having swept the two races at Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit as well as this weekend at Barbagallo Raceway.
- McLaughlin is one of six drivers to win this season, and the only driver with more than two victories. Shane van Gisbergen and Jamie Whincup have two victories, while Scott Pye, David Reynolds and Craig Lowndes also have one victory this season.
- This is McLaughlin’s fifth victory at Wanneroo, and fourth in succession (he swept the 2017 races at the track). Four of his five victories have come from the front row.
- McLaughlin has now won five races or more in each of the last two Supercars Championship seasons. He’s recorded at least one victory in five of the last six seasons.
- This is McLaughlin’s eighth podium of the season – which leads all drivers – and the 50th of his career. He now has seven podiums in 16 races at Wanneroo, including each of the last five races.
- McLaughlin has finished in the top 10 in 11 of 12 races this season, the most of any driver in 2018. McLaughlin has an average finish of 4.42, the best among the 26 drivers that have competed this season.
- McLaughlin came from 19th on the starting grid to win Race #2, ending his streak of three consecutive races with a pole position (and four straight wins from the pole). It marked McLaughlin’s worst starting position by far this season, as he had previously started a season-worst ninth in Race #4 of the Melbourne 400 (lasted 11 laps).
- This marks the worst starting spot in which McLaughlin went on to win a race. His previous worst was 13th, in Race #2 of the 2017 Gold Coast 600 (in which he shared his Ford with Alexandre Premat). Sixteen of his 21 wins have come from the pole, 18 from the front row and 19 from the top four starting spots.
- It also marked the first time in 12 races this season a driver won after starting worse than third. McLaughlin and Premat were the last drivers to start outside the top 10 and win the race, in Race #2 of the Gold Coast 600 last year. In a race competing solo, Nick Percat is the last driver to start outside the top 10 and win, when he took Race #3 of the 2016 Adelaide 500 from the 15th-starting position.
- This marks the first time a driver had won from the 19th-starting spot since the Supercars Championship was founded in 1997.
- McLaughlin’s 7.980-second margin of victory was the largest of the 12 races so far this season.
- McLaughlin earned the seventh victory of the season for New Zealand drivers.
- McLaughlin has now led eight races for 173 laps, both marks bests among all drivers this season.
- McLaughlin is the first driver since Mark Winterbottom to win four straight races in Supercars competition. Winterbottom swept events at Townsville and Ipswich in Queensland during the 2015 Supercars season.
- This is the fifth victory of the season for Ford; McLaughlin is the only Ford driver with a victory. Holden has seven victories, while Nissan is looking for its first win.
- After a solid Race #1 for Ford, however, McLaughlin was the only Ford driver to finish in the top 10. Holden claimed the next six spots and seven of eight, while Nissan claimed two finishes in the top 10.
- David Reynolds finished second, his second runner-up finish in the last three races. Reynolds now has nine top 10s this season, including six in the last seven races. Reynolds was also the top Holden driver.
- Reynolds also has four podiums now this season, and an average finish of 6.58, the second-best among the 26 drivers competing this season.
- The Triple Eight team took three of the next four positions. Craig Lowndes finished third, Shane van Gisbergen was fifth and Jamie Whincup took sixth.
- Lowndes claimed his sixth straight finish of seventh or better, after only two finishes of seventh or better in the first six races. Lowndes now has 258 podiums in 647 races (39.9 percent of races). He has already surpassed his entire 2017 totals in wins, podiums, poles and laps led in 12 races this season.
- Lowndes also made up a race-high 22 positions, making up the most positions in a race for a series-leading third time this season.
- James Courtney finished fourth, his first top-10 finish in the last four races (first since Race #2 at Symmons Plains Raceway) and his sixth top 10 this season. Courtney also climbed three positions in the points standings, from 10th to seventh.
- Van Gisbergen was fifth, earning his seventh top five and ninth top 10 of 2018.
- Van Gisbergen started from the pole position, marking his fourth pole of the season and 22nd of his career. It also marked van Gisbergen’s first pole at Wanneroo, the ninth track at which he secured at least one pole position.
- Whincup was the third Triple Eight driver in the top six, notching his ninth top 10 of the season. Whincup finished 11th in Race #1.
- Nick Percat finished seventh, his second top-10 of the weekend and seventh of the season.
- Andre Heimgartner was eighth, marking his season-best finish. Heimgartner was also the top-finishing Nissan driver.
- Jack LeBrocq was ninth, his second-best finish of the season (fifth in Race #2 at Symmons Plains).
- Rick Kelly was 10th, earning his third top-10 finish of the season.
- Chaz Mostert finished 11th, only the second time he's finished outside the top 10 this season. However, Mostert did lead 19 laps, in the first race he's led this season.
- Simona de Silvestro finished a career-best 12th, marking the second consecutive race in which she secured a season-best finish (was 15th in Race #1 at Wanneroo).
- All 26 cars finished the race. Michael Caruso was the last-place driver, completing 68 of the 83 laps.
- For the second consecutive race, a total of 11 drivers improved on their starting position in the race.
- The next event will be the Winton SuperSprint, May 19-20, at Winton Motor Raceway in Winton, Victoria.
