The 102nd Indianapolis 500 is 18 days away! This is the 85th day of the 102 Stats in 102 Days Until the 102nd Indy 500 blog.

Each day from now until the Saturday before the Indianapolis 500, we’ll post a list of stats related to the race. Some are well-known statistics, while others are a little more in-depth.

A total of 187 drivers have needed a relief driver at some point in their career. Here are the drivers that needed a substitute at least five times, either for part of the race or until the end the race (or that car’s race).

Notes of Interest
- A total of nine drivers needed a relief driver in four races, 11 drivers needed relief for three races, 42 drivers needed relief for two races, and 114 drivers needed relief for one race.
- Ray Harroun (1911), Joe Dawson (1912), Tommy Milton (1923), L.L. Corum (1924), Peter DePaolo (1925) and Floyd Davis (1941) needed relief help during their victories. Only Corum and Davis did not finish the race, resulting in Joe Boyer (1924) and Mauri Rose (1941) finishing the race and being named as co-winners respectively.
- Robby Gordon was the last driver to need a relief driver, in 2004. Gordon was competing in the Indy 500/Coca Cola 600 double and, during a rain delay at Indianapolis, vacated his car for relief driver Jaques Lazier.
