Event Recap: 2018 Supercars Championship from Tasmania SuperSprint, Race #2 (April 8, 2018)

Event statistics following the eighth race of the 2018 Supercars Championship season, Race #2 of the Tasmania SuperSprint at Symmons Plains Raceway in Launceston, Tasmania.

Polesitter Craig Lowndes led 72 laps of the 84-lap race for his first victory of the season, giving up the top spot only during pit stops. He led Scott McLaughlin to the finish by 2.3571 seconds, with Race #1 winner Jamie Whincup coming in third.

Notes of Interest – Race/Weekend Recap
- This is Craig Lowndes’s first Supercars Championship victory of the season and the 106th of his career. It marks Lowndes’s first win since 2016, when he won Race #2 of the Coates Hire Ipswich Super Sprint, breaking a 45-race winless streak.
- This is Lowndes’s 10th victory at Symmons Plains Raceway and his first since 2015, when he swept both races.
- Lowndes now has at least one victory in 19 of his 22 seasons in Supercars Championship competition. The exceptions were 2002, 2004 and 2017, which broke a streak of 12 straight seasons with a win.
- This is Lowndes’s second podium of the season; his first podium came in Race #1 at Symmons Plains. This is Lowndes’s 19th podium in 44 races at Symmons Plains, and his 257th career podium in 643 races.
- This is Lowndes’s sixth top-10 finish of 2018, one behind series leader Jamie Whincup.
- Lowndes, who moved to sixth in the points standings, won from the pole position, marking the fifth time the polesitter has gone on to win a race this season. Seven of the eight races this season have come from the front row.
- This was Lowndes’s 41st career pole, his first of the year, and first since 2015, in Race #2 at Ipswich.
- Australian drivers have now won five races this season, all in succession, with New Zealand having won three.
- Holden has now won seven of the eight races this season.
- Scott McLaughlin finished second, marking his fourth podium finish of the season and seventh top-10 finish in eight races.
- Whincup, who moved to the points lead, finished third, and now has an average finish of 3.0 in the seven races he has been classified in this season.
- This marked Whincup’s sixth podium in eight races this season and the 217th of his career. His six podiums, six top fives and seven top 10s lead all drivers in 2018.
- This is Whincup’s 22nd podium in 34 career races at Symmons Plains Raceway.
- James Courtney finished fourth, his fourth top-five finish of the season and fifth top-10. Courtney also set the race’s fastest lap, on Lap 24.
- Rounding out the top five was Jack Le Brocq, who scored his season-best finish for the second consecutive race. He earned his first top-10 in Race #1 of the weekend, and first top-five in Race #2.
- Scott Pye finished sixth, his sixth top-10 finish of the season, after leading four laps. Pye is the only driver to not finish worse than 11th in any race this season.
- Garth Tander led one lap, en route to finishing seventh, his best finish since Race #2 of the Adelaide 500. It was his fourth top-10 finish of 2018.
- David Reynolds was eighth for his sixth top-10 of the season.
- Nick Percat finished ninth, while Chaz Mostert finished 10th, his seventh top-10 in eight races.
- Rick Kelly was the highest-finishing Nissan driver, in 11th. It marked his season-best finish, bettering his previous best of 13th in Race #2 of the Melbourne 400.
- Anton Pasquale tied his season-best finish of 15th.
- Shane van Gisbergen finished 25th, one lap off the pace. It marked the first time this season he didn’t complete every lap, and his finish dropped him from the points leader to fifth.
- Richie Stanaway did not complete a lap, and was not classified in a race for the second time this season.
- A total of 13 drivers improved on their starting position in the race.
- The next event will be the WD-40 Phillip Island 500, April 21-22, at Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit in Phillip Island, Victoria.
