Notes of Interest – Race/Weekend Recap
- This is Ryan Blaney’s first victory of the 2018 NASCAR Xfinity Series season and the seventh of his career. It is his first at Texas.
- Blaney is the 17th driver to win an Xfinity Series race at Texas. Kyle Larson was the 16th and most recent driver to earn an Xfinity Series race at Texas.
- Ryan Blaney is the sixth driver in as many races this season to win an Xfinity Series race, joining Tyler Reddick, Kevin Harvick, Kyle Larson, Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano. Only Reddick is an Xfinity Series regular.
- Blaney has finished in the top five in each of his two Xfinity Series races this season; he was fourth at Las Vegas.
- Blaney has won at least one Xfinity Series race in five of the last six seasons, dating back to the 2013 season.
- Four of Blaney’s seven Xfinity Series victories have come on a mile-and-a-half track (two at Kentucky Speedway and one at Charlotte Motor Speedway). Overall, Blaney has won at six different tracks in the Xfinity Series.
- All seven of Blaney’s victories have come with Team Penske, all in a Ford, and all in the No. 22. In fact, Roger Penske’s team has won each of the last three Xfinity Series races, all with different drivers (Brad Keselowski at ISM Raceway and Joey Logano at Auto Club Speedway).
- Blaney continued a streak of consecutive races at Texas Motor Speedway in which a Cup Series regular won the Xfinity Series race; the streak is now at six. The last driver to win the race at Texas and not be a Cup Series regular was Erik Jones, in 2015 (Jones swept the two Xfinity Series races at Texas in 2017, as a Cup Series regular).
- This is Blaney’s first career Xfinity Series victory from the pole position and fourth from the front row (most recent came in 2015 at Iowa Speedway). Blaney is the first driver this season to win an Xfinity Series race from the pole and the first since Erik Jones, in last year’s fall race, also at Texas.
- This marks the second consecutive Xfinity Series race at Texas won from the pole. It is also the fourth in the last seven and sixth front row start in the last seven to win the race at Texas.
- Each of the last four Xfinity Series races this season has been won from the front row; the previous three came from the second starting position.
- Overall, this is the seventh time a driver has won an Xfinity Series race at Texas from the pole. This is also the 12th victory from the front row in 35 Xfinity Series races at Texas.
- This is Ford’s 12th Xfinity Series victory at Texas Motor Speedway, breaking a tie for most wins with Toyota (11). Chevrolet remains third with 10.
- Blaney led 132 laps of the race, the fourth most of any driver this season (Kyle Larson led 142 at Las Vegas, Kevin Harvick 141 at Atlanta and Joey Logano 139 at Auto Club).
- Blaney’s victory marked the 20th race in which the driver that led the most laps went on to win the race, and ninth race out of the last 11.
- Christopher Bell finished second in the highest-finishing Toyota, tying his best finish of the season (second at Las Vegas) and fourth top-five finish, which ties him for the season lead with Elliott Sadler. He has now finished sixth or better in each of his two Xfinity Series races at Texas.
- Bell led 10 laps, and has now led five races – the most among all drivers – for 37 laps.
- Daniel Hemric finished a season-best third in the highest-finishing Chevrolet. It was his second consecutive top-five finish and fourth consecutive top-10 result after starting the season with 26th and 11th respectively.
- Hemric’s 32 positions advanced marked the most of any driver in any race this season. The previous best was 30 positions, by Tyler Reddick from 40th to 10th at ISM Raceway in Avondale, Arizona. It marked the third consecutive race in which he finished better or stayed in the same position that he started.
- Hemric led 39 laps, his first laps led since the season opener at Daytona International Speedway.
- Cole Custer landed a season-best fourth and his fourth consecutive top-10 finish in his Ford.
- Ryan Preece, in his second Xfinity Series race of the season, was fifth, marking his second top-10 finish in as many races in 2018.
- Hemric wasn’t the only driver to make up a lot of positions Saturday. Matt Tifft scored a season-best sixth-place finish, advancing 30 positions for his third consecutive top-10 result.
- Jamie McMurray earned seventh, his second top-10 finish in as many races this season.
- Elliott Sadler, the points leader, claimed his sixth top-10 of the season. He has finished in the top 10 in 14 of the last 15 races, dating back to last year. Sadler also completed every lap of a race for the fifth time this season, and has completed all but one of 1,056 laps this season (his 1,055 laps completed lead all drivers).
- Sadler is now only driver this season who has finished all six races better than he started (came into the race as one of three, with Garrett Smithley and Stephen Leicht). He made up 26 positions (started 34th), and has advanced an average of 10.67 positions per race. He owns a finishing position of 5.33, best among all drivers who have contested all six races.
- Austin Cindric was ninth, his second top-10 result of 2018 (seventh at Atlanta Motor Speedway). It marks the first time this season Cindric has finished on the lead lap in an Xfinity Series race.
- Despite a spin early in the race, Spencer Gallagher rebounded to finish 10th, his third top-10 finish of the season (he’s finished 14th or better in every race in 2018).
- Others who earned or tied season-best finishes included: Chase Briscoe (11th); Ty Dillon (12th); Dylan Upton (17th); Ryan Sieg (18th); Bayley Currey (22nd); Josh Bilicki (24th); and Spencer Boyd (25th). Currey was the only driver making his first race of the season (was also his series debut).
- Justin Allgaier’s four-race streak of sixth-place finishes or better (two second-place finishes in a row) came to an end after he finished 35th, retiring with engine problems.
- A total of 26 cars finished the race, a season low (previous low was 27 in season opener at Daytona International Speedway.
- Five drivers led their first laps of the season: Brandon Jones (nine); Michael Annett (five); Ross Chastain (two); Jeremy Clements (one); and J.J. Yeley (one).
- A total of 19 drivers improved on their starting position in the race.
- Mike Harmon and Matt Mills failed to make the race.
- The next race will be Saturday, April 14, with the Fitzgerald Gilder Kits 300 at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee.
